So, back in early October, I decided it would be a great idea to make a (female) family member a purse for Christmas! Easy-peasy, right? Well, being somewhat dodo-brained at the best of moments, I decided to make the pattern from scratch instead of using a pre-existing one. When combined with the generally hectic nature of my life at the moment, naturally this meant that a project that should have been a month of evenings ballooned into a huge undertaking which I only just finished today. At least I had fun making it! One advantage of making my own pattern is that, since I made it using CAD, I have proper technical drawings, and I can easily scan in the pattern for the carving design. Do y'all think it would be worthwhile putting the pattern up for sale as a digital download? If so, are there any sites you would suggest?

A friend of mine into historical reenacting brought me this hat for repair. I replaced the hat bill with real leather (8-10oz veg tan) and hand-stitched it back together with 0.8mm Ritza Tiger Thread. The leather was dyed pre-cutting with Black Fiebing's Pro Dye and clear-coated with Resolene.- 4 comments

Spanish Civil War Ammo Pouches
alfredleatherworks posted a gallery image in Gallery- Our Leatherwork
From the album: Finished Projects
A small run of Spanish Civil War ammo pouches I did for a friend who was into historical reenacting. These were based off of photos from the era and an existing replica I had access to (the darker pouch in the upper-left, which I repaired as well). All made from 8-10 oz veg-tan leather, solid brass hardware and copper saddle rivets. Hand-sewn with linen and hemp thread (linen for the repaired pouch as that is what it was made with, and hemp for the new ones I made because I preferred the higher tensile strength and greater resistance to rot).-

This kidney belt pouch pattern was made by Dark Horse Workshop. The backplate/lid, belt loops, and center strip were all made of 5-6 oz veg-tan and dyed with Green Fiebing's Pro Dye. The dye was airbrushed with the carving masked off, then the carving was given a coat of Fiebings Pro Resist before rubbing the whole thing down with Fiebing's Medium Brown Antique Paste. A final clear coat of Fiebing's Leather Balm with Atom Wax was applied and bused. The antler was cut from a skull gifted to me. The drawstring pouch was made from chocolate brown chrome-tanned upholstery hide. The "stone" set in the lid is acrylic, sourced from a maker on Amazon.-

Carved honeybee veg-tan wallet. Backplate is 5-6oz, the rest is 2-3oz. The artwork is hand-painted with Fiebing's Pro Dye, the rest is airbrushed with the same. Machine sewn on my Juki 1541 (yes, I'm a smidge rusty with my machine skills). -

Just finished up this bag for a customer. My first women item. She wanted a tote style business bag but she may need it as a carry-all. I built this one differently than other bags. This one is lined with a horsehair canvas and top layered with a beautiful purple Japanese Bemberg. The Bemberg is stronger than silk and breathes better than cotton allowing the leather air. This was a steal from how custom handmade men's suit jackets are made. I borrowed this technique from my clothing days and it really worked out nice. The bag has a nice structure to it with out using heavy or stiff leather. I tried bag stiffener inserts before, but tore them out, I didn't like the feel. The outer shell is an Italian pull-up leather 2/3 oz. those of you that have used pull-ups before know how soft that is. The other pieces are constructed with Herrmann Oak veg-tan. Like the corner bumps, helps give the bag more protection from scraps and added structure. I'm most proud of the handles. I think the style and structure came out great. I also like the belted top, keeps the bag from fully opening if you hold it by one handle. Finally, she wanted a "Coach" style plaque on the front of the bag. After calling every trophy shop in town, no one wanted to make me one... they would make me 100 but not one since I needed "not the standard plaque". I found an old nerd technique online how tech folks would make their own PCB boards. I used this method on solid brass with some metal stain and it came out awesome. All the leather is hand sewn saddle stitched with Tiger Thread. I went down to the smallest I could find. 0.6mm. Has I nice feminine look. Kind of a mix between a doctor bag, hunter bag, in a tote style. Dimensions are 18" wide x 15" tall x 4" depth
