does anyone have any idea what type of leather i would use to cover this kind of box

that would depend on what you want it to look like when done. You can use about any kind of leather on it depending on the desired out come.

Worked in a prison for 30 years if I aint shiny every time I comment its no big deal, I just don't wave pompoms.

I woukld suggest very thin Chrome leather maybe from goat, lots of stretch

Mi omputer is ot ood at speeling , it's not me

Goat would be good, but I'd suggest Sheep Nappa

That's if the OP wants to just recover the box with any new leather

I have a antique typewriter in my shed...somewhere, it comes with a wood carry  case (  a bit rare to even have a case I think) , similar to the case in the pic. The case needs to be recovered , so this would be good for me to learn as well.  It's been on the ' round-to-it ' list for a while now.  Some old cases once had a ' leatherette' type material . 

It would be good to see the finished product.
