Can not find my Horse!

Recommended Posts

I made a set of saddle bags but seemed to have misplaced the horse

the bag itself is a Herman oak split

back strap is 9oz veg tan

flap and straps are 6oz veg tan

saddle tan antique with neutral resolene

as a resist. And tan kote finish

front panel of the Bag is 2” smaller than the back giving the bag an “offset” lookIMG_0334.jpeg.227daee4634c0d24ae0b409c452b0b83.jpeg

Nice job Frodo. If I had a nitpick I think the look would be better and more rounded if the front panel went over the gusset. same holes just a different look.

Thank you for the reply,  the front panel does go over the gusset. At the top but not at the bottom,   Is that what you meant?   Cover the bottom also?    Hmmmm, not a bad idea

the outside panel is 2” smaller or 4” total narrower than the back panel

maybe this picture will help. The first image you saw was kinda crappy

Shows offset

I'll bet the horse will turn up if you fill the bags with feed.  Did you include hardware to tie the bags on your saddle?

Those are cool!  I've been toying with the idea of replacing my black leather saddle bags on my motorcycle, and making some with a more western style in brown/tan with tooling.  I seem to have way more ideas for projects, than I have free time to get to them.

This first picture has the two parts together and sewn through like yours' This gives a dished effect.

This pic shows the front panel over the top of the gusset and sewn through giving a more rounded look. Same pattern, same holes just a different look.

Curious to know cuz I got a split myself, did the antique  work on the other bag you were making?

Not really,  it turns it dark and that us about the extent of it

what does seem to work is cheap liquid polish you get at that dollar major store

it slicks down the fibers well,  I use it on the back side

Saddle bags are generally attached to the saddle by the saddle strings on the saddle. I used to punch 4 holes (2 on each side) to run the saddle strings through the saddle bags then through a slotted conch, and secure it with some fancy braided knot or bleed the saddle strings together on all my saddle bags or doctoring pouches..

Some nice work frodo. If you can't find a horse or bike to throw them on you could always grab your six gun and throw them across your shoulder and become a old time bank robber. I'm sure they would hold plenty of loot.
