Skiver?

Recommended Posts

Saw this on Marketplace near me for $75. Looks like its past redemption.

327FED, if the gears aren't broken, it turns and the spring isn't frozen,  its not past redemption.  It'll take a fair bit of TLC and elbow grease, but I think it might surprise you.  This was made back when things were made to last a lifetime. I would check it out if I were in the market for one and it wasn't too much of a drive. Its my understanding that the skiver was designed with firmer leather (veg tan) in mind.  I just looked on Ebay and there are two American skivers being offered for $399 + shipping.

I have a Landis 5-in-1 that I acquired about eight years ago.  It has the skiver and four more actions.  I thought long and hard before I parted with $850.  In the end, I'm glad I did.  I thought that it had gotten lost in the move so I went looking for a replacement.  I saw one on Ebay  that the owner wanted $1575 to part with it and it needed a bit of TLC. I'm glad I grabbed it when I did.

I'm thinking a submersion in evapo-rust bath & it will make it look new again. Would probably free it up to, if its locked up/ frozen.

I would be willing to to try, since its priced right.

I'd offer him $50.00 just to clean it up and park it in my shop for the cool factor.

I get these once in a while - 2 to 3 a year on average. This one would not make make my "no way list" for that price. If it has a good blade and all the mechanism on the back side for sure I'd be on it.  It will take some time and penetrant to get it broken down. I suspect more than Evaporust but that's where I would start. Once you get most of the rust off, I like PB Blaster or ATF/Acetone mix to penetrate and free it up to get apart.

I have a 5 gallon of used motor oil & diesel fuel mixed 50-50 & drop old rusty stuff in it for a few weeks,it comes out pretty stinky but it kills all the rust & soaks in all the bearings, screws & makes it alot easier to tear down.

He'll offer &40 and tell him the rust is against him and the time you have to put in it  would cost more than it's worth just to make it a conversation piece
