This side of the pond we measure the size of the leather in feet and then measure the weight millimetres confusing for some. Although have noticed some suppliers are now giving the size in feet but also will also give the size metric too. Quote

The odd weight is 2000lb plus 240lb for the barrel weight. And this carries on down; the hundred-weight is 100lb plus 12 lb for the barrel =112lb Ships were measured as to how many Tuns of wine barrels they could fit in their cargo hold thus a 150 Ton/Tun ship actually does does not weigh that That's interesting and makes sense. It's interesting how measurements came about. kgg Quote Juki DNU - 1541S, Juki DU - 1181N, Singer 29K - 71(1949), Chinese Patcher (Tinkers Delight), Warlock TSC-441, Techsew 2750 Pro, Consew DCS-S4 Skiver
Contributing Member fredk Posted May 23, 2024 Contributing Member Report Posted May 23, 2024 (edited) Inches, foot and yard are interesting Edward 1st was regulating measurements. On your fingers the first section, from knuckle to the first joint, was called a hinch. Eddy ruled that the hinch of his finger was the standard measurement to be used. And 12 hinches was the length of his foot, thus it was the be the standard. To be used during his lifetime. The h was soon dropped as it was a nearly silent letter. You'll find your hinch more or less equal to 1 inch btw when the French used inches, their inch was about 1.25 inches, longer. So when they say Napoleon was short at 56 inches tall thats French inches which is actually 70 inches which is 5 ft 10, not short at all (proven) You often see the medieval longbow arrow called cloth-yard shaft long. Edward 1st was constantly at war. When he took up using Welsh long bow archers he found there was great variation in the length of supplied arrows. The width of the standard weaving loom at the time worked out at 34 to 37 inches wide. In setting his standards the looms were to be 36 inches wide, thus it was ruled the supplied arrow shafts were to be no less than the width of a cloth loom. Commercial weavers worked together in a weaving yard. As usual everything got contracted and simplified Next lesson will be . . . . Members Sheilajeanne Posted May 23, 2024 Members Report Posted May 23, 2024 (edited) And the cloth yard was the distance from the end of Edward's nose to the tip of his thumb, when he was standing with his arm stretched out perpendicular to the ground and at a right angle to his body! I remember that from grade school! Edit: okay it was King Henry I , not Edward: https://www.splashlearn.com/math-vocabulary/measurements/yard#:~:text=A yard was originally the, yards between the goal lines. Members Handstitched Posted July 30, 2024 Members Report Posted July 30, 2024 I'm still here, in body at least . I found out why I couldn't find my address on ISP sites, is that my address wasn't on any data base(?) ...or some silly thing like that, its was like my house never existed. I got in contact with a regional internet helper thats provides internet advice and assistance to peeps in the bush, and thats what they found and corrected it. I'm still using public access atm, but hopefully not for long as they also gave me some ISP's that serve the bush and that are also in my budget. Its just a matter of me getting my act together. I might even treat myself to a new 'pooter'. I think I said that last time . But this thing called life keeps getting in the way , lol . Members Handstitched Posted August 27, 2024 Members Report Posted August 27, 2024 G'Day, I'm still using hot spot on my phone, it works to a degree, but the phone signals out here in the bush are crap. A strong wind or some rain causes it to drop out... frequently. I'll have a new pooter in the (hopefully) near future. Members Nowandagain Posted August 29, 2024 Members Report Posted August 29, 2024 (edited) People who assume that because something is easily available in the U.S., it must be available worldwide, then, after you explain it’s unavailable in your country, respond by telling you where to find it in the U.S. I should hasten to say I haven’t encountered that at this forum. toxo Posted August 31, 2024 Report Posted August 31, 2024 TV sports commentators, especially the BBC. Usually they're experts at their sport but no consideration is taken for the rest of us that just happen to catch something that might be interesting and don't have a scooby doo what's going on. It would be great if one of the commentators was a novice and asked basic questions of the expert so we all know what's going on. I tuned into the paralympics the other day and if you were lucky someone might say "This is the mens GK or XY category ???? No mention about what makes up that category, what these athletes are dealing with. I watched a cycle race in the velodrome where one guy with one leg was racing against a guy with two legs??? Quote

Members Handstitched Posted September 12, 2024 Members Report Posted September 12, 2024 The other ' pet peeve' I have atm, is when customers don't pick up their items. I have a few horse rugs that I repaired, still sitting on the floor of my workshop, been there for about 2 months, unpaid. I have contacted the customer a few times, , all I get in reply is " I'm busy" or " I have a lot on atm" or " I'm in Perth" . They'll be going into storage pretty soon , they're taking up precious ' floor real estate' and I keep walking into the damn things. I can't be too agro, as I'm the only one that does horse rug repairs, and its a small town, don't wish to step on any toes.
