Without proper tools, what I would do is take a piece of wood or maybe a 2ft ruler and two pieces of wood maybe 5 inches long. Put ruler on top of head on edge, clamp the two short pieces front and back and clamp when they're touching the head. Do one measurement for front to back and another side to side. Measure the circumference of the head with a soft tape measure and draw it on paper making sure the circumference touches the measured front/back and side to side. Add a seam allowance for stitching.

Mine's not really really finished either. Was made for someone who reneged on the deal and it doesn't fit me so it's not finished.

How do you work out the size of a hat?

Simple as can be; measure, in cm, around the head. just about 1 to 1.5 cm above the ears and eyebrows. For a small head this will be about 54 to 56 cm, for a medium head about 56 to 57 cm and for a large nut about 58 to 60 cm

Here is a conversion chart to go back to the old hat sizes

Thanks Fred. I guess it's not doing any good sitting on the shelf.

I've made 3 hats nothing special, but the thing is they use up a lot of leather, there heavy and hot to wear, so no more hats for me LOL:dunno::no:

Use a cloth tape. Measure the circumference of the head. Then it's just math depending on what type of hat. 3 panel = circumference divided by 3+ your fudge factor or seam allowance etc. That's how we do it with fur hats anyhow.
