Contributing Member Regis Posted January 31, 2007 Contributing Member Report Posted January 31, 2007 (edited) Hide Crafters have had a lot of their video tapes on sale for $5.00. I've bought a number of them and have been learning things that I just can't get from a book. The one I just watched was Rolled Edges using French knife. It is just great and I'll use various of his techniques on other projects and heavier leather. Carving Roses also showed me more about properly casing, tracing, and carving. Just wanted to pass it on in case some want to take advantage of the five buck sale. Regis Edited January 31, 2007 by Regis Quote
pepin1948 Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 George is a great teacher, and kind person. He sent some basic videos along to me when I told him I was volunteering with our local 4H group. It really helped the kids to see a pro doing it. He makes everything look so easy! Quote
Members whinewine Posted January 31, 2007 Members Report Posted January 31, 2007 It is a really good deal: for the price of one dvd ($19.99) on leather, you can get 3 or 4 different vhs tapes containing the same information as is on each dvd. I ordered 7 this morning. They are reproducing them until Hidecrafters' sale ends (I think till the end of February.) Quote

I really like these video lessons and am glad that Hidecrafter has made so many of them on different subjects. Sometimes it is so much easier to understand something when you see it done than when you are trying to figure out written instructions. This really is a good deal if there is something you are interested in learning. Clay Quote
Moderator Art Posted January 31, 2007 Moderator Report Posted January 31, 2007 Hi Holly, I agree that George's tapes are great, I use them for Scouts. However, there is one video about airbrushing where George does a horsehead. I have never seen all of that video and I have had it for at least 8 years. It just puts me to sleep. I could take that thing on a roller coaster and not even play it and I would go to sleep. If you have trouble getting the kid to sleep, put that video in bed with him, and if he is really cranked-up, play the darned thing and he will be asleep in no time. Art Art, You are right about that. Even the videos with Robb Barr and Robert Beard are a little dry. I never met Robb but everyone always talks about what a character he was. I have taken classes from Bob Beard and they are anything but boring. Not sure why they can't be a little more themselves in the videos. I guess they aren't made for entertainment value. But when it comes to educational value, they do that well. Clay Quote
Members whinewine Posted February 1, 2007 Members Report Posted February 1, 2007 (edited) The one by Cheryl Smeja (Wetforming & Lasting) is likewise incredibly boring- good info, but booooooring. She presents her material all dressed in black against an all black background, so (other than what she's showing how to do) all you see is her head & her 2 hands, & most times, just her 2 hands, unnervingly floating in space, unconnected. I wanna see a third hand show up, just to keep me awake & break up the boredom. And she speaks sooo sloooowly & in a monotone that it tends to whip the audience into a stupor. I haven't viewed the 'Making wearable Masks' video yet- just haven't had the energy level to stay awake. Edited February 1, 2007 by whinewine Quote
BruceGibson Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Ha!! And I thought it was just me! George knows his stuff--I've never met him, but he's good friends with a couple of friends of mine. Lively, he ain't. I just stop mine where I start to drift off, and restart at that point when I wake up. Darned educational! Quote
Billsotx Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 I gather y'all are saying, "He's a live wire!" ... Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou? ... lol! Quote
