RBD Report post Posted January 9 I am looking for recommendations for larger hole punches. I find the Tandy multi head punch kit quite adequate for holes up to 8mm, but haven’t found good punches for larger holes. I’ve bought an inexpensive punch set from Princess Auto (similar to harbour freight, I think, in the US?)and tried sharpening them with mixed results. I like the ‘midi’ set from Boehm, but the punch sizes only go to 20mm, and the maxi set is way out of my price range. I am just a hobbyist, so price is a factor in my choice. Any advice would be appreciated. Brian
fredk Report post Posted January 9 I would say to look for old second-hand Gasket punches. They go up to at least 3"
DieselTech Report post Posted January 10 C.s Osborne I know has a set up to 1" or 25mm. They offer this set up to 25mm.
SUP Report post Posted January 10 (edited) If you don't mind sharpening the punches, try Amazon. I saw a set going up to 50-55mm. Temu has punches as well as die templates. The prices are reasonable enough that if they turn out bad, it does not pinch. Many of the Temu items are surprisingly good too. fredk Report post Posted January 10 (edited) Then there is this set, from 20mm to 50mm, 7 pieces, usually less than £10, Can be used wit a press or a mallet. I have three sets of these. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/315979279210?_skw=7x+DIY+Leather+Punchers+Craft+Cutter+Mold+Die+Round+Hole+Punching+Tools+Kit&itmmeta=01JH6X1EFRZV6FQFEDP8E4H4N0&hash=item4991d52b6a:g:HS0AAOSwWttnPaVE&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAABIHoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKmPVtfR0YsX0%2Bpz0o6ncUHPgCClkmP1vVdaJOl4FoQUOF2A4OFxHxm5c1edWVp35xCxz9XcBtjBu2tanqTd5Ew%2FtaVycWi878i8F6UEGe5SJG66zFY%2FACdTH1fWPW8uYV92kt6kLYwW%2Bzdidt7B%2BraN8pTTeJno0iwQtiI9%2F1GrZgFMmMAHXUKEjcnot5qV1xEaEDzCSdKw729bKSdC4gQx5TqfEUchrZeN5gRPfCVjOYMVybV7qK%2B5NRWk0ZHLjdAhAubnBQ9AOfW6fDZh33dYT179B96iNdx%2BjVLjL5vFe7Jvtk0qeOnfzKXrrBbRnnh63xmas3zB9Cwd6OaHnpEeo5sJwWaamIMzPHX3rCd%2FfQ%3D%3D|tkp%3ABFBM_ueF3Yll Edited January 10 by fredk

Northmount Report post Posted January 10 18 hours ago, RBD said: I am looking for recommendations for larger hole punches Try Grainger for arch punches. Individual sizes and set. https://www.grainger.ca/en/product/ARCH-PUNCH-1-1-4IN/p/GTL1271O?analytics=prodRecs&cm_sp=IDP-_-CAV-_-RR-_-PR-_-NT-NA-_-EN https://www.grainger.ca/en/product/ARCH-PUNCH-SET-NOT-TETHER-CAPABLE/p/WWG3ZG91 Not cheap, but you can get one or two at a time. I have a few from them. I tried a set of punches from Princess Auto and found them to be almost useless. Have been happy with the "General" brand from Grainger. TomE Report post Posted January 10 Beiler's sells arch punches from 1/4" to 2" that are "made to their specifications." The 3/4" is $28.79 and the 1-1/4" punch is $35.99. I am pleased with the quality/price of their pippin punch and strap end punch, and think the arch punches would be similar quality.

SUP Report post Posted January 11 (edited) I do leatherwork as a hobby as well and am reluctant to spend a lot on punches and such. So the ones on Amazon,Temu and eBay that @fredk, @kgg and I mentioned work fine. I sharpened mine and am happy with them. You need to have a good set of whetting stones though or know a good knife-smith who can sharpen them for you. If I decide to take it up professionally or even to sell the items I make on a regular basis, then I might invest in the more expensive sets, more because the long handles - I hope that is the right word - on them make punching easier. Even those, there is no guarantee that they will be sharp though. You might still need to sharpen them. So essentially, what you are paying for is the convenience of that handle. Of course, if you ask around on this forum, there will be many helpful persons who will guide you to the ones which are sent out sharpened.
