Members 1Poet Posted April 2 Members Report Posted April 2 I have not been this exact problem discussed. If it has I apologize. I cannot get the upper tension correct on my cb4500. I have made positively sure that it is properly threaded with 207 thread. Proper 23 needle. I test on two pieces 7/8 veg tan. No matter where I set the tension, primary and secondary, the thread does not consistently place the tread into the leather, as designed. A few stitches will be ok and then several at the top of the stitch row. I have checked the entire tension springs and parts. All ok. I have the tension screw adjusted almost off the post and it still is not pulling the thread inside, or below the surface. I know I must be missing something but I don't know what! I am not a newbie. Been sewing many, many years, but not on this type HD machine. Any help will be heartily appreciated! Thanks in advance! Quote

Pictures of the top and bottom stitches would help. Quote
Members 1Poet Posted April 3 Author Members Report Posted April 3 (edited) Will take pics and post asap. However, it is the top thread tand is pulling up to the leather surface. Edited April 3 by 1Poet Quote

Most of us use a #24 needle with #207 thread, top and bottom. However, if you use #138 in the bobbin, a #23 needle should work. If the knots are showing on top, and you've backed off the top tension settings (primary and secondary disks), Increase the bobbin spring tension. Also, install the bobbin so that it feeds against the direction of the slit to the spring. This increases the tension while ensuring that the thread doesn't work itself out of the tension spring. Members amuckart Posted April 3 Members Report Posted April 3 Watch how the thread is coming off the spool as you sew. If it’s not despooling cleanly and catches at certain positions that’ll cause a tension spike in the top thread. The solution if it’s just catching at a certain point is to make sure the thread guides are exactly centred over the spool and to make sure there’s enough distance between the top of the spool and the thread guides. if the thread is catching because the bottom of the spool has rolled or collapsed a bit I don’t know how to solve that.
