Chef niloc Report post Posted January 6, 2012 Horween leather Any one here ever deal directly with them? I have sent a few sales inquires over the past few months to the email address they provide on there sight "Sales Inquiries: john@horween.com", but I never get a response? I am inquiring about purchasing shell cordovan hides in color #8 or whiskey. I asked them to quote me a price, availability, and minimum order requirements. I told them I was interested in 50-100 shells, I think that would meet there minimum? Maybe I'm wrong and that might be why I don't get a reply? My emails include my contact information and my businesses name, my title, so it should not appear that I'm just some guy trying to buy one or two hides.Any one know what I might be doing wrong or a better way for me to contact them? Ferg Report post Posted January 6, 2012 I bought as little as two shells from them. I called and talked to Nick Horween. A large part of their inventory on the shells are sold to large shoe manufacturers. I had to wait about a month if I remember correctly, for my order to arrive. They do not pursue individuals for business but do not seem to mind filling the orders. Do not always have what you are looking for color wise or size. ferg Horween leather Any one here ever deal directly with them? Andrew Chee Report post Posted January 9, 2012 What's the ballpark price range for a single piece of shell cordovan direct from Horween these days? Also, do they only sell it to you in a single thickness or can you ask for specific thicknesses? I'm looking to get some myself. Thanks. Andrew

Andrew Chee Report post Posted January 20, 2012 I've been talking with Eric over the last two weeks about ordering a shell and some other stuff. He's very good to deal with; responds promptly to enquiries and is very helpful. He is a busy guy though and I guess this arm of the business is still pretty small time so it does take some time to find out what's available and such. All in all he's been a good guy to deal with. Andrew Chee Report post Posted February 20, 2012 Thank you very good hides and service Nice. Which grade of shell is this and can you take some more close up shots? They have so many grades for their shells I'd like to get a good ideas as to what to expect. Thanks. Andrew
jwilson Report post Posted February 21, 2012 The grading system is based on size, not quality. It goes 1-5 and a #1 is 2 square feet+, and a #5 is 1 sq ft I believe. And the pricing is based on size, not price per square foot. Example, I just ordered #5's for about $50 a piece and #2's for around $150 a piece. the size difference is only about .75 sq ft. Hope that helps Andrew!

The way I understand it is that the grading is by size #1 being the biggest.

Can you tell a big difference in useable area between a #1, #2, and #3? I bought #4s cause I'm prototyping some wallets and Eric said that I should get enough yield from a #4. How long did it take you to get your order? It's been going on two months since I started talking to Eric and getting some shells. Figure since we're the small guys it's just gonna take longer for the tannery to get around to us. Andrew

The #3 and down get thinner (should be right for wallets), quality is the on all of them.
Andrew Chee Report post Posted March 1, 2012 Here's the two shells I ordered from Horween. Took about three months to get to me. I purchased two shells. One in natural and the other in Cognac. I ordered grade 4's. As you can see, the quality is nice but they are pretty small. Just enough leather to make one wallet. The largest piece of my pattern is about 7"x7". Yes, I have and haven't had much better luck than you. I just talked to Eric regarding Tannery Row and prices aand pictures of the leathers that he and John Cullinton said were going to be availavble soon. That"s not happening either! Eric hit me at $10.95 /S.F for one aside of Latigo!! It's beutiful leather but, I can't handle the pricing. I'd call Nick Horween direct (the owner) he's a real nice guy and will give you a quote , I'm sure. I'd expect you'll have a long wait. Good luck. veedub3 Report post Posted September 22, 2013 Does anyone have a guess at the price range for horween chromexcel? and or essex? Springfield Leather now sale a few Horween products and you can buy it by the sq.ft. They also have pieces that are 1' x 2' for $28 which is what I got he last time I ordered. No ragged edges that you can't use, just a nice square piece. Very nice stuff. Karina

Scouter Bob Report post Posted May 23, 2014 Does anyone have a guess at the price range for horween chromexcel? and or essex? it is 13$ and change for 5.5 oz chomexcel, 17 feet + per side. But it is sooo sweet to work with. I was in Chicago this week and stopped in to purchase some leather from the "holy land" of leather. this company has a great deal of pride in what they do and very welcoming and down to hearth. I suggest you find some excuse to visit Chicago and make an apointement with Curtis at Horween. you will see what your chices are and get to sign the wall and met some great people.
