chancey77 Report post Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) My first attempt at a picture of a full face, this is on a test scrap before I change the art work...the shadows from the original picture don't match the light source...but I had fun attempting to capture the Man In Black:) I am going to do some figure carving so i was testing my tools and stamps if they where going to be up for it:) Any tips welcome! I tried not to cut what should be beveled. Then I 2 toned it with Silver and Black. Does it still look like Johnny?????? Not sure but I think it is close.) A better drawing would help...... DoubleC Report post Posted March 15, 2012 I'm just learning about light and shadow so I might not be a big help Chancey, but I think if you had nailed the angle it would have been almost dead on. But with the pic of him with his chin tucked in is more chiseled that when yiu lifted it. But i think it's a great start on Johnny!!! Cheryl
chancey77 Report post Posted March 15, 2012 Yep I should have reversed what I have now on the bottom of the chin and jaw area:) That was 1 hr of work tooled and dyed...this dog needs to slow down! I know that is one of my problems with this particular piece, I rushed a way to much...and when it wasn't looking like what I thought it would i just rushed it more...like pulling off a bandaid:) OUCH!!!!!! OK it's over... At first I really hated it and that is a bit rare, but after I dyed it black and added a wipe down of silver it was much better:) Well good enough to post up for some feedback and tips:) I hope 50 years leather can help me on some good advise:)
DoubleC Report post Posted March 15, 2012 I hope he can too Chancey. I am sorry I did't answer sooner but I did n't get notified of this. There are so man talented leatherworkers here that you'll get some help. I'm just not one of them unfortunately. About the only thing I have going for me is I stay up late and can post at least, LOL. I rush things too Chancey and maybe it's because we're interested in so many things, I DK. Because i enjoy every minute I have a piece of leather ion my hands, so I don't know why I get in a hurry and ruin it. Band aid is about right. Yep, a better drawing would have helped. I think if ya want to use that pic, you've got to stop adding your own lines. If you invert the pic, tool in the black areas ONLY when you dye it, the high areas will be black and the tooled in would be silver/white. Seeing what you've done so far, you should be able to pull this off Well, that's my 0.02€ worth.
David Report post Posted March 15, 2012 I think my advice would be to put your beveler away and use knife work only on the inverted pic. Give it a try, it should make a world of difference. Dave
Ferg Report post Posted March 15, 2012 I don't think the image you selected is bad, it is your rendering of it. With this type of image I think you should ease up on your tooling and modeling, it is distracting from what you are trying to do. If you want to "catch" the image as in the pic, you need to use Neatlac, or similar, as a resist. Apply it with a good quality brush to all the areas you want to stay white. Allow your first coat to dry completely then brush on another coat. Don't apply so it is too heavy. Nice light coats are better. Make sure the resist is very dry. Now, apply your paste dye. Allow it to dry just a tad more than normal before wiping. When you get the desired effect seal with at least two coats of finish of your choice. I believe you will be surprised at how great it looks in comparison to what you done with the first try. ferg My first attempt at a picture of a full face, this is on a test scrap before I change the art work...the shadows from the original picture don't match the light source...but I had fun attempting to capture the Man In Black:) I am going to do some figure carving so i was testing my tools and stamps if they where going to be up for it:) Any tips welcome! chancey77 Report post Posted March 15, 2012 Hey thanks for all of your advise...I am going to attempt another Johnny:) Maybe not on just a scrap piece:) And put some time into it when I am not rushing! Ya know since I moved to Finland it has been very hard to get little things...especially finding a Neatlac, about the best I can find local is a spray that is basically spraylac. So I make do without some things, but it has been a lot of fun finally meeting lets see ok ya 4 other people in all of Finland that do this kind of work:) HAHAHAHAHA So that is why the guys that are supplying to the Boot makers here which there are 1,000's of...don't cater to us AT ALL! They could really care less:) But hey, DIY is the way I live anyway and always have! THANKS SO MUCH FOR SOME HELP WITH JOHNNY! WE DON'T WANT HIM ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE THAT IS FOR SURE! I am breaking new ground for myself this year and I am attempting to get as much info as I can on this kind of leather carving. As most of you know I specialize in Tattoo styles and day of the dead, BUT REAL PEOPLE...that is very tough! I will post up my new CASH here when I am done... AS Y'ALL KNOW ,I AM VERY BUSY, SO I WILL TRY TO GET ONE DONE IN BETWEEN ALL MY OTHER FIRES BURNING:) AGAIN... THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
