Curley Fryes Report post Posted September 28, 2012 I saw alot of posts where people were paying a high price for shipping on granite slabs. I just got a 9X12X3 granite slab from Grizzly.com for $31.40 shipped!
HellfireJack Report post Posted September 28, 2012 Hate to tell you this but you probably could have gotten a free slab from your local stone supplier's reject/waste pile. Most of the time they have to pay to haul that stuff away and if you ask nice you can just have your pick.

Most of the time they have to pay to haul that stuff away and if you ask nice you can just have your pick. I tried that route, but nobody around here would give me anything for free. They all wanted to sell me some jagged cut up smaller pieces for $20, so I sprang for it.
Ed in Tx Report post Posted October 2, 2012 I went the route of my local granite countertop fabricator and bought a sink cutout for $10. When they do the cutouts for sinks they generally cut them either square, rectangular or oval for bathroom sinks. Try a couple of different places before you spend $30. If you just want to buy one, Springfield Leather has them for $19, it is a 12 x 15 slab.
immiketoo Report post Posted October 2, 2012 I have to agree with Curly on this one. The greater Chicago area is filled with people trying to make a buck. I found this place that had exactly what I wanted (Read 3 inch thickness) for a reasonable price. I tried a dozen different places, none of whom were willing to deal. raysouth Report post Posted January 5, 2013 Another good source is monument companies. They usually have good size scrap for cheap or nothing. Ray
bruce johnson Report post Posted January 5, 2013 Just to toss my 2 cents in here. The granite inspection plates from Grizzly are sure nice and priced right. Curley is talkng about one that is 3" thick. The countertops don't come close to half that thickness. For heavy stamping or to really quiet it down, that thickness and mass sure helps make clean impressions quietly. Grizzly has a deal with shipping too. If you don't need the mass, then the sink cutouts work well. When they have them in stock, they are a couple bucks at the local Habitat For Humanity outlet store. I had a larger end cut off a countertop that I got free from a cabinet installer too. It was OK but a littel bouncy and tinny even with the weight from a large size. I used to use a free headstone too and that worked as well as the inspection plate. The biggest problem was I wanted to make a bench with the rock inset into the top. They wanted about as much to square up the headstone edges I had, vs. buying a larger inspection plate from Grizzly that was already rectangular and smooth sides.
