Chat Rooms

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if there were any set times that group discussions were held in the chat rooms so we could talk real time and ask and answer questions? If not not maybe we could start some kind of group "Therapy" thing and maybe a spelling group LOL.

live chat on here seems to be a hit and miss thing. Several times I have found member there off and on. Maybe if you are there or have time to be there you could post on the forum that you are there so others know when to go there because some one will be there for sure. Other wise I look on the list of topics page and at the bottom it will list who is in the live chat if anyone.

Tom,

An area of the forum that probably doesn't get utilized enough. It sure would be doable. We had a little deal a month or two ago with saddles. Denise kind of organized it by setting up a time and making an announcement that on (insert day here) at (insert time here) anyone interested in discussing saddles can meet in the chatroom. It was pretty good, and several people checked in. We really didn't know what to expect as far as how many. We didn't have an "agenda" so it was kind of free for all - talk about this or that, and introduce yourself to others in a less formal setting than a board post. Some people who don't "do chat" didn't quite know what to expect, but it ended up pretty good. We have recently discussed doing it again with a set topic of interest. Kind of have it a more or less regular thing, with a different main topic, and then anything goes discussion afterwards. I think that could apply for any area of interest - sheath making, holsters, motorcycle seats, etc. Set a time up and go for it.

Some thing that has been kicked around was when we got a little flush, new features could be added to the board. One thought was video capability. Either real-time or recorded demos. With the prerecorded demos, the auther could have a chatroom time for Q&A. Not sure if we could do real time and have Q&A right there or not. Something to think about and kick around.

For us European (at least me anyway) a posted time is hard to convert to own time since I don't know if that is the time of the topic poster who lives in one place and someone chimes in and ask if it could be changed to this or that time and that someone is from a totally other place in us wich get's confusing. I mean what is the timespan between east and west coast in US? and when you guys from US discuss time and have lapse in between your local time perhaps you have some general time you use like : central ?? (city) time wich is generic. Hm not sure I make myself understandable here.

Maybe we ought to have a LW clock so if anyone suggest 11 pm us people who are confused bout this can chime in easier??

I didn't just grab the situation described out of the air. There was a thread about meeting a specific time in the chatroom and the time got changed a few times and I just couldn't keep up with it and got confused (wich I generally do when numbers are involved, numeroligical dyslectic;-) Hey, I have a hard time to remember if pm/am is night or day. We count time from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59.

Just my thoughts as european and a bit lost in time;-)

If you click the "Calendar" at the top of the page, you will see the "community" one by default. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will see a drop down arrown next to community calendar which takes you to- CHAT calendar. The idea was that people could post when they would be there and topics, and we could meet up without cluttering up the board with chat requests. It hasn't caught on yet, I guess.

I will work on a clock feature, but in the meantime in "my Controls" then time settings, you can view a list of the hours of difference between the time zones.

Linda can get her microphone to work for speaker chat in the chat room- any other volunteers want to experiment? (Note to self, buy a mike!) We are going to integrate video into the site, then we're gonna twist arms until some of you make us demos and lessons to post. I think it will be fun, but understand many of our leatherworkers are old and cranky and used to hammers and knives, and think computers are nuisances. Some dogs don't want to learn new tricks. Maybe some of you younger geeky folks can lead the way?

I try to go into chat whenever i see someone in there and I have a few minutes. Fave Theobald and I share coffee a couple of times a week. I think the chat room would be a good way for us all to get to know each other better and talk about leather and whatever in real time. If anyone has any problems with it, PM me or dsenette and we'll get you fixed up. We try to make things as easy as we can here at LW, so don't be afraid to holler if something isn't working like it should.

I have also invited guilds to use the room for private or public meetings- it's 100 times easier than mIRC, I promise.

Hi Tom,

trying to make sense of the times over here.

First,

PM = post midnight (Sweden 12.00-24.00)

AM = after midningh (Sweden 24.00-12.00)

There is 4 time zones here on the lower 48 states,

EST (eastern standard time) This will be 6 hours after Sweden and 5 after UK.

CST (cenrtal standard time) This will be 7 hours after Sweden and 6 after UK.

MST (mountain standard time) This will be 8 hours after Sweden and 7 after UK.

PST (passific standard time) This will be 9 hours after Sweden and 8 after UK.

Here's a link with states and exact time zone etc. http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbrevi...nes/na/mst.html

Hope this helps a wee bit:-)

One thing that I have noticed about the chat room is that sometimes people drop in, most likely to see what is going on, and feel like they are intruding or interupting or just dont belong and leave without saying anything. That's not so! Everyone is welcome at any time. If people want to carry on private conversations in the chat room, they can do that simply by clicking on the persons name on the left side of the screen, and a new, private chat window will open. Sometimes when people are in the chat room, they are also doing other things on thier computers and don't notice when someone else comes in. It doesn't mean they are ignoring you, just that they might not notice someone came in. So you might want to just give them some time and they might come back.

Try the chat room out if you see someone in there that you want to talk to or just go in and wait and see if someone else will join you. It's a fun way to get to know each other.

Dave and I send each other sounds to get our attention. Click the note symbol and there are a lot of choices. You can test then before you send them. Of course, it only works if the other person has their speakers on.
