tboyce Report post Posted October 3, 2014 ETW Grumpy sent out a call for a Dr's Bag pattern and Butch was kind enough to upload sketches and drawings of one that he has. I thought I'd take it one step further and see how I would assemble that bag. Ohio Travel Bag carries frames for the Dr's bag. But anyone with access to bench vise and a grinder and drill press can create their own. I included those instructions as well. I didn't include sizes for the chicago screws and washers that would provide the hinge for the frame because I sort of did this on the fly without going to the store and sizing them myself so I just winged that. You'll have to verify those sizes yourself.I also included instructions from the AL Stohlman's book on making the handles but Ohio Travel Bag carries those as well. As usual, the drawings are 32X24 and can be printed off at any Kinkos or Office Depot or anywhere with a large format printer. Special thanks to Butch for providing the drawings that I was able to create this patter fromIt shouldn't be too difficult a bag to put together. If anyone has questions shoot me a line. Blackey Cole Report post Posted October 8, 2014 Do you think you should have posted someone else's copyrighted work, the page 13 pdf is from a book done my someone else. You could have just as easy posted to refer to it. I'm sure Tandy will be upset.
tboyce Report post Posted October 8, 2014 I thought about that but Fair Use in copyright laws allows up to 10% of someone else's published work to be used. Also, since I am not doing this for any commercial gain...Tandy can be upset but there's not a whole lot that they can legally do about it. It is within the law
ETW Grumpy Report post Posted October 15, 2014 Hey Tom, thanks for going to the time and effort to make the templates and do the tutorial. That was a lot of very well done work and I, for one, really appreciate it. You mentioned that Ohio Travel Bag has the aluminum frame if we don't want to make one. Is it the same size as the one you made, or will we need to adjust the size of the bag pieces to accommodate the OTB unit? Thanks again, I guess I will have to finally get off my back side and get one made for my brother. Levi
tboyce Report post Posted October 15, 2014 (edited) Levi, Ohio Travel Bag makes them in several sizes. I based the design in my plans on the middle one, If you are going to make one from my plans, there is a flaw in the design and that is that you will have to bend one of the pieces so that it fits completely inside the other piece. The way I show it on the plans, the clasp wont close. I would adjust the bends of the 'inside' frame piece to accommodate double the thickness of leather that you're using so that you can wrap the leather about both frame pieces and have it close. I fixed the flaw and re-uploaded the design here: Good luck DRS BAG 1.pdf Edited October 15, 2014 by tboyce
