thekid77 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) Hey friends, I need your advice/experience with securing card slots with the stitching straddling over them... My question is this... Is it absolutely necessary to double the thread over where the thread straddles the stress areas of the card slots, ie, at the top of the pockets as shown in the pictures below?? I am using braided polyester thread (Ritza 25 Tiger thread), and even at .6mm, this stuff is incredibly strong....my gut tells me that the weak link if anything were to go wrong would be the leather and not the thread....but I'm not sure... I don't like doubling the thread over because it ruins the look of the stitch line but I also don't want my stuff falling apart.....I just can't see the braided poly thread breaking even if there is some force against it..... what does everyone think? electrathon Report post Posted February 18, 2015 The leather will tear far sooner than the thread will break.
thekid77 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 The leather will tear far sooner than the thread will break. That's what I was thinking, thank you for settling this in my mind....now I can have a nice uninterrupted line of stitches and peace of mind LOL
Windrider30 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 Yeah I have to agree the leather will give out a lot sooner then the thread!!
NVLeatherWorx Report post Posted February 18, 2015 As already stated, the leather will give out way before the thread will and I have never doubled the thread at a stress point in my entire life working with leather. If you think about it, wouldn't that extra bulk (little as it may be) put extra stress at those points (providing that your holes have punched to a proper size and allow for a snug fit already)? You are on the right track in your thinking.
Wild Bill46 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 I feel as the majority here does. Haven't had the opportunity to use Tiger yet, but from what I read, its a strong medium, and would most likely outlast your pockets, Which appear to be a thing of beauty ! --- Wild Bill46

Oldtoolsniper Report post Posted February 19, 2015 I made a case for my iPhone. It was way to tight and therefore pretty worthless. It is 5 oz veg tan and beaver tail laminated to one side. Hand stitched with .8 tiger thread. Since it would not fit I decided to experiment. I found a white plastic cutting board the same thickness as the phone, ripped it to width on the table saw leaving it plenty long. I placed it in my vise and clamped vise grips to the warm water soaked case, I drove the case over the form by striking the vise grip nose ends with a lead hammer and flat bar. The stitches held as did the leather and the tiger thread did not break. It's plain old saddle stitched and weldbond glued, no knots, expect back stitching three holes at the start and finish. I use it everyday, I doubt the thread is going to fail from the phone sliding in and out or my pocket after all that abuse. I really thought it was going to fail, come unstitched, or tear as I was beating the snot out of it. All that being said I would recommend sizing the case properly in the first place. Windrider30 Report post Posted February 19, 2015 Oldtoolsniper I feel for you on that sizing the case properly decided to make a "phone case" the other day well it does what I wanted it to...but unforitnatly instead of holding just one phone I can stuff about 6 of them in to it plus my wallet...lets just say the case is a bit big LOL
