Contributing Member MedusaOblongata Posted October 28, 2022 Contributing Member Report Posted October 28, 2022 Only slightly off topic, but I've found Weldwood Gel formula (blue can) so much more useful than Weldwood's standard contact cement (red can) that the gel type is all I use now. It doesn't get stringy and spreads more smoothly and more thinly, and stays where you put it. Local hardware store doesn't carry it, so I order a few pints at a time online. Acetone works to thin it if I let it sit too long, but I haven't noticed it needing thinning when new. Quote
Members Handstitched Posted October 29, 2022 Members Report Posted October 29, 2022 I'm way late on this, CA can go off a bit too soon in the tin, but to thin out CA, I use ' toluene' to thin it out * . Too ex$y to keep throwing away. Depending on how much is left, around a table spoon( maybe more) in the tin. Leave over night, and its ready to use the next day. *the chemical make-up of other brands of CA maybe different to ours. Toluene is strong in vapour , and hard on the skin,( it burns) be careful. Use PPE . I used to use it in the fibreglass pool industry in another life...amongst other nasties. Members Dwight Posted October 30, 2022 Members Report Posted October 30, 2022 I have never had any real problems with acetone . . . provided you don't dump a boatload of it into really thick old weldwood. Normally . . . I keep my weldwood in a glass commercial jelly jar . . . and watch it for thin / thick consistency. When it start getting a tad thick . . . I'll put in a tablespoon or two . . . stir it good with a screwdriver . . . wipe the screwdriver . . . and go on. Works well for me. May God bless, Dwight Quote If you can breathe, . . . thank God. I use it to apply 8.5x11 bright orange notices on the windshields of cars that park in handicap spaces illegally. Put it right over the steering wheel so I'm sure they see it. Oh I have to get some for that great Idea Quote
