Juki Ddl 554?

Is there such a model? I haven't had much success searching on that model number, so hope someone can help out.

A chap is selling his two machines, a Juki DDL 555 straight stitch and he thinks the other is a DDL 554. It's in storage at his folks, so he's going to have a look at it. He said it's a walking foot, with about a 20mm lift on the foot. He didn't use it much, apparently, he mostly used the straight stitcher.

As far as I know, there's no 554 class Juki. There's a 552,553,and 555. There is a 555-4, the 4 is a subclass of the 555's. These are high speed garment machines.

Thanks Eric, that's what I suspected. The fact he hasn't used it for quite a while means he's probably confused about the model. I'll let him know that he'll have to check the number on it (but he's adamant that it's a walking foot).

Come to think of it, Singer made a 554B class coverstitch machine, but those are somewhat rare and single purpose. It's technically a chainstitch (no bobbin), and they were around in the 1960's mainly for sewing the inside of pocket bags on Levi's. I have the Union Special equivalent that we still use on jeans.

Definitely a Juki, he said he bought the pair together and spent a heap getting the straight stitch working. I've asked him to check the model number.

there is a Juki DLU 450-4 w/a a top feed foot,the outside foot pulls back with the lower feed dog.It is good for thin leather 2-6oz total #46 or 69 thread.The foot is kinda wide for a lot of things too.Here's a pic of one we have.

Thanks Bob. I would consider 69 thread to be a bit limiting. It's obviously not much use for heavier gunbelts?

It may be a single needle with no reverse, sometimes they do that.

I thought I knew 55x series pretty well after getting 553 and researching the product line, but I cannot recall seing a walking foot machine in the series.

So it is unlikely that he got the the model number correctly.

The modern equivalents of 55x series are 55x0 series, and there are 5550 and 54x0 now, so the closest to what he suggested may be 54x

I'm curious to see just what model it is. Definitely a walking foot, non-computerized and also fairly old I'm guessing.
