Members LCoomer Posted April 5, 2016 Members Report Posted April 5, 2016 Hello everyone! I've been tooling leather for a few years, but this is my first post. I'm currently getting back into leatherworking after a 3 year hiatus and I have a question: I've seen some people mention oiling leather, particularly on holsters, and then coating with neat-lac. Can anyone give me a little more information on that? I've never treated a leather before applying the finish, so I'm a little out of my comfort zone. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! Members Halitech Posted April 8, 2016 Members Report Posted April 8, 2016 Any time you dye or tool leather, you take oils out of the leather so that is why you want to treat with EVOO or neatsfoot oil or similar before putting the top finish on. Just don't believe what some say, neatsfoot oil is not a finish. Quote
Members byggyns Posted April 8, 2016 Members Report Posted April 8, 2016 I treat with Neatsfoot. Some have said they use Lexol. I tried it once & didn't like it. First, I dye the leather, then the neatsfoot, After that I use either Resolene (spirit or oil dyes) or the Tandy pro finish (Tandy pro waterstains). I've done the wet molding before and after dying, and I'm still trying to figure out which way I like better. Quote
Members chiefjason Posted April 8, 2016 Members Report Posted April 8, 2016 I try to let my oil or oil/wax finish set overnight or all day before finishing. I use a 50/50 oil and wax mixture rubbed on then heated with a heat gun to soak it in. I let that sit so any extra oil can soak or evaporate off before finishing. Quote
Members LCoomer Posted July 20, 2016 Author Members Report Posted July 20, 2016 Thank you for the advice everyone, I really appreciate how helpful you all are. I ended up using neatsfoot oil, and finished with Angelus acrylic finish, and I'm very happy with the results. I'm putting the finished projects up tonight for y'all to see, if you want. Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted July 20, 2016 Contributing Member Report Posted July 20, 2016 Yeah, let's see 'em ! I've heard good things about that Angelus finish, but i've usually got too many trials and test-fits going on to try it out! Quote
Members Colt W Knight Posted July 20, 2016 Members Report Posted July 20, 2016 I'm a big fan of Angelus acrylic leather paint, I bet their clear should be good too. I have been using mop n glo with great success, would I havent found a reason to switch from it yet. Quote
