shedhunter Report post Posted March 29, 2017 Id like to get some suggestions on what type of strap would work on this purse. It's 12" long, 9" tall and about 4" wide. I'm pretty new to leather work and open for ideas. Thanks

gigi Report post Posted March 30, 2017 Very nice purse!! Where would you prefer to attach the strap? on the side gussets?
Dwight Report post Posted March 30, 2017 I'd be awful tempted to come up with a couple of 1 inch wide straps at the bottom, . . . going up to maybe 1 1/2 right at arm pit level, . . . and have someone sew up an artificial cinch to go up and over your shoulder. It would be wonderfully comfortable, . . . and unique, . . . but not overpower the beautiful purse you made. May God bless, Dwight
RockyAussie Report post Posted March 30, 2017 That's are hard one at this stage. Nice looking work. How bout horse shoes front and back? Weld a 3/4" to 1" prong on the outer ends and make some leather straps to attach to the top line. Here's a picture might inspire...... or not.
gigi Report post Posted March 30, 2017 (edited) @shedhunter is the horse-head carved? how is colored? one more idea: a shoulder strap from the front left upper corner area to the opposite corner on the back side (right upper corner). another one (doesn't quite fit with the design but... just an idea.. where handles become a strap, 'closing' the bag in the same time): http://www.leathercraftpattern.com/leather-downloadable-patterns/Leather-bag-patterns/leather-bucket-bag-pattern-pdf-download-ACC-31 Edited March 30, 2017 by gigi
fredk Report post Posted March 30, 2017 I must ask the OP to clarify what sort of strap. One to carry it, an over the shoulder strap? or a closure strap to hold the top closed? Or both?
shedhunter Report post Posted March 31, 2017 I wouldn't care if it was a strap for over the shoulder or to just carry. I am also working on a bigger tote and would like to use old slobber straps or hobbles to attach the strap. The photo I took was my inspiration. I appreciate everyones ideas! ldgood Report post Posted April 8, 2017 slobber straps are a good idea, I love the horseshoe handles for the small bag, are those wood? Very nice bag! Did you do the painting of the picture also? Nice.
shedhunter Report post Posted April 8, 2017 Nope, I didn't paint it, it's embossed leather that I buck stitched on. Going to do one with a ranch brand for a friend next. I wanted to get it done so I just decided to do leather straps with spur rowel conchos.

Grumpymann Report post Posted April 12, 2017 (edited) How about a simple strap and go with a fancy attachment to the bag? Done right it would enhance the work you've done and not distract from your work so far. (Which is impressive) Took my advice before I gave it. Nothing to see here ..... Move along.
