Various sized rivets, different base-same head?

Recommended Posts

I'm constantly having problems with lenght and diameter of rivets while making (mostly) sheaths. It gets difficult, combine the diameter of the rivet's head with the lenght, depending on close to edge and thickness of the leather(layers).

Is there any kind of "universal" rivets, that has something such as: 1 size of the head and 3 or more different lenghts of the base? And there are several sizes, such as (5mm diameter - 3,5,8,10,12mm lenght; 8mm diameter - 5,8,10,12,15mm lenght, etc.)? It would be infinitely easier to rivet nearly anything.

If you search them out you can get rivets with the same size head but different shaft lengths. You can also cut the shaft shorter. With a double head rivet you need to cut it with a rotary saw on a dremel type tool. On single head rivets I just cut with wire cutters then reform the shaft with a bodkin shoved into it. This can be done on a double head rivet too but its more awkward

Not quite the same look, but a burr rivet (available in copper, brass and aluminium) can be trimmed to whatever length you want. Also you can get chicago screws in a range of lengths if you search eBay for "binding screws". Secure them with a drop of loctite. I usually buy them from Hebar/Green Grizzly.

I think it's the Leatherworkers Manual, or the Leather Tools book, they show how to cut down longer rivets to size.

I'm out of town right now but maybe someone else has a copy and can confirm which one and maybe even post the picture.

I have a few different sizes in the length of single and double cap rivets. I think I only have smaller diameter in single cap.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but I'd like to somekinda avoid this. I believe, that if I "stock" myself with various rivets (lenghts, diameters, colors, etc.), I can work for a long time and without obstacles (as long as you have a reliable supplier).

That's why I'd like to make myself a proper stock of rivets from 4 up to 15mm sized head, single and double, including at least 4-5 different distances on each rivet, all in every color (antique brass, polished brass, silver, gunblack and copper).

I know about them, but I really don't like their look. I don't know why, because I could bet my head, that they are stronger than any other rivets, but the look...just isn't something I'd put on my work.

Which still doesn't say, that I don't admire other people's work with them!

Mind if I ask, where did you get them?

I am in Australia, so buying them from anywhere specific is probably not going to happen (my 'local' Tandy store is about 4000kms away from where I live). I bought some in a job-lot from a lady going out of leatherwork ... that has happened 3 times now.

There is a small leatherwork and costume store near the centre of Perth, I have bought some bits 'n pieces from there, and I have bought some tools, rivets and leather online from ebay, and some items from a company called Birdsall's Leather.
