Rossr Report post Posted September 1, 2018 I was inspired to make one of these after seeing @YinTx post on the beautiful one he made. This one is oil tan leather. Veg tan for the carved panels. I just played around with some simple carftaids I had, I also machine sewed the whole thing. Not a hard project at all really. I did rush it a bit and it shows in my carving and sewing in spots. This is a user for me and will replace the bag I have that is worn out. should last me a long time! Always welcome ways to improve so have at it and Thanks Yintx. garypl Report post Posted September 1, 2018 Nice job Ross - I am going to have a go at one of these soon. Did you use a pattern or just cut as you go? Gary

ScoobyNewbie Report post Posted September 4, 2018 Very nice! I going to try and make a dopp kit and an overnight bag for my husband, after I finish my purse and gloves and belts and coasters and hat and...and...and... Does it really ever end?

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try. i wonder if it would be too thin? Ross 1 hour ago, ScoobyNewbie said: Very nice! garypl Report post Posted September 4, 2018 Ross, that was my concern as the upholstery leather is very soft and supple. I have 3 large pieces, so I will try it and post results (unless it is a complete disaster, which I will also report!) Gary

Gary That's what I often use for things like this. And I will often run a stitch line alone the "corner"/Edges the give it more rigidity if needed. when I skin couches the leather from the backs is usually not all that soft. Give it a go and see what you can do.
YinTx Report post Posted September 4, 2018 A few years ago tried to make a dopp kit from soft leather... didn't like the way it came out. The very first thing I made was an overly complicated dopp kit that was ruined in a house fire, but I liked it. I imagine the softer leather version would be easier to pack in luggage, so all I can say is try it both ways, see what you like! My preference is the most recent version I just did - not veg tan, not soft upholstery leather, so now I'll have to make one for myself... YinTx
