source for roo hide?

i wanted to finally order a roo hide and try making my own lace. i tried hide crafter but, since being sold i guess the inventory is on hold for the next 3-4 weeks as i was told everything i wanted to order was out of stock.

Anyway... does anyone have a sorce for roo hide?

Beeze, if you just want to play, I have recently acquired 16 of veg tan roo hides. They are older hides and some have some issues, but they are perfect for making lace. The only difference between that and the stuff from David Morgan is it is not greased. I can send you one out if you are interested for a fraction of the cost from Morgan. Let me know by PM and we can work out the details.

Ok, I have questions about kangaroo hide. I bought the one I have from Jim Downey in Arizona. I have had it a couple years and never did anything with it. I have seen some of the amazing things Peter Main does with kangaroo so I wanted to try carving on it. The hide I have didn't take water well, it felt greasy. I could carve on it, but it didn't take tool impressions very good. So, is there a difference between the greased stuff, and regular veg tanned? Why is it greased?

Kangaroo's biggest use is predominantly the whip and lace industry. The greased hides have been pre-treated with a dressing, or tallow to preserve the leather, and when you plait your whip you put additional tallow between the plaited layers. This keeps the leather hydrated. And since you don't tool the thongs, it doesn't matter that they are greased.

Also using a greased thong, prevents your lace from wearing out when doing laced edges.

And the only main difference is the tallow added to the hide. Most of the time the hides are either bark tanned or veg tanned.
