Members benlilly1 Posted November 16, 2018 Members Report Posted November 16, 2018 I've been asked to make a Santa Belt 4" wide and 70" long. Being this is novelty, would it be wrong to use one thickness of leather rather than sewing 2 pieces together? He said he wanted a more quality belt than what he has. He is buying the buckle off of Ebay. Quote
Northmount Posted November 16, 2018 Report Posted November 16, 2018 Is it for a large man, or is he adding a bunch of padding to get to that size? If he is really that large around the waist, I would seriously consider using 2 layers. Reminds me of my grandfather many years ago. He asked for a belt for his 56" waist. So I added the 4" for the buckle end, and 8" for the tongue and took it to him. It just met, could not be worn. I didn't have another strip long enough, so he never got his belt! Tom Quote

Tom Hi Tom, He isn't a real big guy. It's padding. The original one he has is smaller in length so adding some inches to it. It's hard to get a 4" buckle so when he said he found one, I said to get it! We'll see how this turns out. Thanks for the response! Quote
Members ScoobyNewbie Posted November 17, 2018 Members Report Posted November 17, 2018 We have some great big brass round ones at Tandy! They would look great on a Santa belt. But you say he’s already got one... Quote
Members jcuk Posted November 17, 2018 Members Report Posted November 17, 2018 Hi for a belt of that length you are looking at a Bridle back or Harness back slightly heavier weight than the Bridle back, not sure of your budget, they are quite expensive this side of the pond and maybe you will be left with to much leather after you have made the belt - not sure if suppliers over there would cut you a four inch strip, would be worth asking. If it was me, I would buy two just in case i messed one up. I left you a link so you can see the length of a back, yes they are this side of the pond it is just to give you an example, you will be able to backs over there. https://www.metropolitanleather.com/Vegetable-Tanned-Leather/Coloured/finished-veg-tan-bridle-back hope this helps JCUK Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted November 17, 2018 Contributing Member Report Posted November 17, 2018 Most the people who contact me using words like "high quality" want their belt lined. On something so "novelty", I would likely still line it, though you could probably get away with lining with some type of fabric if cost is an issue. Candy striped maybe? But for me, I would think that someone specifically asked for "more quality" wouldn't mind paying the added cost of leather liner. The STITCHING costs more than the leather on a belt that size! Quote
Members SaddleBags Posted November 17, 2018 Members Report Posted November 17, 2018 Made one for a guy two years ago -- tooled with holly leaves and berries. Made it of one piece of 11-12 oz and used a double tongue brass buckle. He came back last year to have it lengthened, then again this year to put more holes on the running ed. he doesn't use padding, so you can guess how much weight he's gained. In all modesty, it's a quality looking belt, but I suggest that you be generous in your use of leather to avoid having to do it over in upcoming seasons. Quote

Otherwise, I would have to find someone that would cut a length 70" long. 1 minute ago, SaddleBags said: Made one for a guy two years ago -- tooled with holly leaves and berries.
