Members Mungo Posted November 26, 2018 Members Report Posted November 26, 2018 Anyone have one of these? I don’t have the woodworking equipment to build one. I also don’t have room for the full sized bench horse and don’t need one very often, so this looks like it might fit my needs. Quote
Members DJole Posted November 26, 2018 Members Report Posted November 26, 2018 That's a pretty common design -- Tandy sells a similar one. I don't have one of those, but I have heard people tell of two drawbacks to this design: 1) To move the piece around in the jaws, you have to unscrew the wingnut, adjust the piece, and then screw it back down again. Some people dislike having to do that. 2) The wingnut catches thread while you're trying to sew. Some people have modified theirs by adding some kind of thread guard, others changed the wingnut to something else. Quote

Contributing Member fredk Posted November 27, 2018 Contributing Member Report Posted November 27, 2018 I've been thinking of buying this one; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIY-Leather-Craft-Lacing-Sewing-Leather-Table-Hand-Stitch-Pony-Horse-Clamp-Tool/202436849658 My old one is a basic home made one; have to loosen a wingnut to move item, uprights fixed in one position - this one has a lever clamp and the uprights can be rotated Quote

It is a smaller clamp compared to the one I built myself, so it has its uses. It works perfectly. Thread does not snag on the locking lever because its recessed into the frame. If they had a bigger unit, I might have bought that one as well and retired my home built pony. Quote

Members c2369zulu Posted December 2, 2018 Members Report Posted December 2, 2018 (edited) I have one of the Weavers. I really like it. I also have one made by a friend. The only complaint I have is that most of the designs don’t have much support for forward and backward movement. Edited. Sorry, thought you meant stitching horses, but it looks like you are referring to stitching ponies. I have two of the $100 Tandy versions (at least that is about what they cost when I bought mine). You cannot open the jaws much wider than a thin wallet’s width with it. One of the jaw sides snapped in half on mine when I over tightened it slightly, so that was my fault. They are nice, but a bit overpriced and you are quite limited on workpiece thickness.... Edited December 2, 2018 by c2369zulu Quote
bikermutt07 Posted December 2, 2018 Report Posted December 2, 2018 There are also some neat acrylic ones out of Russia. They were on eBay for a bit and then (I think) they disappeared. It's been a while. Quote
