Mark842 Report post Posted September 24, 2019 I'm getting ready to go shopping for someone to make me a cutting die wheel as shown in the attached photo. I'm wanting to use it on my strap cutting machine. I have about 10 machine shops within 5 miles of me that say they do stuff like "turning, Milling, EDM, CNC, etc. I know nothing about machining and don't want to look like a total fool while shopping around. Anyone give me just enough knowledge to got to a shop that does what I need?
MikeRock Report post Posted September 25, 2019 Is it the fluted piece you mean? Email me at <mikerock@mhtc.net>.

Yes, it's the fluted piece but I see no need to email anyone unless they live within 5 miles of me. I'm not do business with someone I have to ship my equipment to, to have matching pieces made. MikeRock Report post Posted September 25, 2019 I m not asking to ship or to do the work. I've been making metal chips for more than 55 years and thought I could help you define your problem to your local guys. Sorry.
Mark842 Report post Posted September 25, 2019 Well then you should be able to answer my question. Why do I have to email you? Perhaps I like keeping my contact information private. Seems like every time I email anyone I have to deal with 6 months of spam, so no offense but if some one can't answer my question here I'll get it answered eventually locally. MikeRock Report post Posted September 25, 2019 I thought it would be quicker to take it off list and go over some fine points. Sorry I bothered you.
Mark842 Report post Posted September 25, 2019 Why am I not surprised. Seems like if I ask what time it is, all I get is ten people that want to tell me what day of the week it is or try to sell me bubblegum. Sorry I even asked.
blue62 Report post Posted September 25, 2019 Sounds like you should just throw it in the car and go for a 5 Mile drive and ask, can you make this?
Northmount Report post Posted September 25, 2019 @Mark842 The machinist will have to turn the piece, then mill the surface similar to how they mill or broach splines. Your splines look like they have about a 5 degree offset or slope. If straight cut will suit you, you may be able to save a couple dollars. It's likely not worth the time to set up a CNC program for a one off. Take the part in with you and tell them you want them to make a new one. Here is a web page that will explain some of what you are looking for. Tom
