Did you dampen the leather prior to stamping, and what did you use to stamp mallet or press

Bevel around the outline of the letters?

i would leave some space between letters and background instead of going right up to them.

Yes dampened the leather. Maybe not enough?

I think your problem is the background. The letters get lost in it. The only way you can fix that is to make the background a different colour from the letters.

Next time, as suggested, leave blank space around the letters to help them stand out.

HaloJones nailed it. Bevel  the outline  . Thats something I often do , its a bit fiddly, but effective  .Dying or painting them in a prominent  and contrasting colour will help too .  :)
