Members Retswerb Posted October 5, 2020 Members Report Posted October 5, 2020 Ok, I’ll ask the dumb question since I’ve never used anything solid like this: how do you apply it? Does it have to be reheated to apply? Quote

Does it have to be reheated to apply? If you make it as a balm, you can scoop it out with your fingers and rub it into the leather by hand. If you make it harder, like a shoe polish, you can use a rag to apply it and rub it in. The heat from you hand and or the friction of the rag will warm it up as you are applying it. Quote

Happy to share the knowledge with others and maybe persuade others to share their recipes more openly. I have been looking for a recipe for home made Antique finish for Veg tan tooling leather. Just wanted to check to see if you have any ideas, I have been told it is mixed with floor polish. I would like to do an experiment to see what happens. thanks so much for your above recipe, I am going to try this one out Edited January 2, 2021 by cltech9 spelling Quote
Members Brenna Posted January 20, 2021 Members Report Posted January 20, 2021 Stupid question, would that recipe be the same to seal the leather? I've dyed a faded saddle that I was given and I want to use a wax finish to make it soft and grippy. Have you had any problems with this for dye rubbing off? Quote

I use it to seal after dyeing and a thorough rub down. I have had no issues with dye rubbing off after applying it as a sealer, but it is critical that a good rub down is done before applying it as a sealer. If you want the feel to be on the tacky/grippy side, increase the ratio of beeswax to the recipe, as that will give it a slight tacky feel after its been applied to the leather. It will eventually soak in be rubbed off from use, but another application will bring that tacky feel back without being greasy or staining. Quote
