What the heck is this...burnisher?

Not sure in burnishing lace.

 

But the confusing part to me is all the burnishers I've seen are wood primarily and seen a few plastic hand ones.   So this being a steel bit made me scratch my head.

lots of brass and steel burnishers out there, I think even Sam Andrews uses a metal one in his holster shop.

You can burnish with pretty much anything, a plastic lighter, a pen, anything with a hard and slick surface. 

All those timber/bone/bullhorn burnishers are just one more of those "for leatherworking" specialist items that don't really have a practical reason of existence.  Other than workshop aesthetics maybe

I've got a hunk of deer antler I grab most of the time works great .   That being said I have lots of other ways but that antler ...well that's the one lol

I have a collection of old porcelain insulators that I use. All sorts of different sized "grooves" for any size project.

For thin leather you can try a spark plug :D

I use the wood handles on my bevellers , especially the narrow bits,  just ideal for curves, corners etc.

I like that.   Sounds like for a full range of burnishers I only need a spark plug from my Dodge C/V, one from a Farmall and one from a Cessna 150
