Making a strop seems simple, but how many times have we seen those without one or who go any buy one. Here is how to make one that is plenty big enough for the biggest of head knives. Please forgive the pictures, but this is a one man show. If all you need is a strop for swivel knives, they are pretty easy to make. Put stropping compound on anything fairly substantial and hard (even a business card will do) and set it on a hard surface. The green thing is a strop made out of conveyor belting, you can get it from Weaver or Bob Beard. This is a horse butt, it is hard jacked between 7 and 9 oz., this one is 8oz. These are available from Springfield Leather, Sherid…

We get a lot of interest on leatherworker.net about the subjects of knifemaking and sharpening. This applies to pretty much all leather edged tools. This forum is here to collect all of this information for use by those who want to know sharp from dull, and from screaming (or bleeding) sharp to just adequate. I will be your forum sponsor and moderator, as such, I am pretty freewheeling, and will participate as much as needed and also as much as possible. We have a lot of well known knifemakers and sheathmakers who lurk in the other forums and who I hope will find a home here. I got into leatherworking because I needed sheaths for my knives; and nobody ever made one f…

I've made leather sharpening strops before, and have simply loaded them with green chromium dioxide stropping compound and away we go and not had any problems But I've been idly Searching YouTube and see that some people oil or grease the leather before applying compound - so which is it, please, to grease or not to grease?

Is it possible to change the geometry of a swivel knife blade just by stropping it? My knife came with a fantastic blade and I would hate to alter it to an undesirable angle. I probably don’t strop it as often as I should and when I do it’s only stropped two or three times on each side. Still, if need be I could get something like the Big Red by Chuck Smith to correct the angle. Thanks

I am looking for advice on how to sharpen an old pair of Scissors. I took them to a local sewing shop and ask to talk to some one how does sharpening and a young man comes to me and asked if he could help. I showed him the scissors and looks at me with a silly look on his face and said, "we cannot sharpen them". When I asked why, he said that they will not fit in there Jig. I have tried then on a oil stone and all it did was polish them a bit, took them out to the shed, put them in a vice with could of bit of wood I famde to hold the blade and found a old file I have had for years, but not used from England and two or three passes ruined the file. …

Bought my first one when I was 16. Has sharpened many upon many a Buck/Gerber/Puma knife, scissors and all of my leather working tools. Still use it, but it has dulled from medium to a dull fine by now after over 45 years. The 4 pack is a great deal - one of the few things that is cheaper in the US than in Europe. http://eze-lap.com/products/diamond-hone-stone/ I can very highly recommend them. I have gotten accustomed to move the file over the object to be sharpened and not the object over a stone - I go by the shadow method to actually see progress and thus know when desired finished edge is achieved. Actually, I don´t use any other met…

What is the popular brand(s), type and grit of Grinding compounds for Round Knife, Skiving Knife, & Swivel Knife sharpening and polishing. Please specify grit or microns. People often say the Black stuff. But that doesn't necessarily indicate grit abrasion Thanks, Mark Clark

I bought a weaver punch online for a great deal. After receiving it I found out why. Its dull it takes a a ton of pounding to punch through 8oz leather. Nothing like the other punches I've bought directly from weaver. The edge also looks uneven again not so with my other weaver punches. I've tried stroping but no luck and sharpening something like this is out of my wheelhouse. I know weaver used to have a sharpening service but I can't find any information on that. Does anyone know who I can send this to? A few pictures to show the edge
