Earlier this year, I was approached by a retailer who asked to feature my leatherwork in his shop. The retailer owns a well-known, independent gallery representing other area artisans. It's also located in a high-traffic shopping district. It sounded like a good opportunity and I agreed. After a few months, a change in the retailer's business model ended our partnership. But I certainly feel I learned a few lessons that I'll share here in case anyone else considers going down the "retail path." Lesson #1: Retailers take a big cut of the sales price. Retailers generally take a 40-50% cut of an item's sales price. This means you need to price your items accordingly. If a…

Marketing Handcrafted Leathergoods A basic guide for craftspeople This practical guide sets out a range of cost effective and commonsense leathercraft marketing strategies for maker/retailers. Introduction I have been working leather for more than thirty years. In that time I have attended countless craft markets, owned and run four retail shops and more recently set up a small manufacturing unit and wholesale leathergoods operation. I am happy to share my knowledge but definitely don't have all the answers; so if you have any great leathergoods marketing ideas you want to share or need more information about anything in this guide then please email me at ray@barefoot…

Hey all, So I’m biting the bullet and getting my business license. While I work on finding locations for retail displays, I’ll be selling at art/craft markets. But, my first market is approaching in about 2mos, and I have no clue what I’m doing. My initial thought is just to focus on small-dollar items (bookmarks, bracelets/cuffs, keychains, etc.), with the initial goal of covering the cost of my next Tandy run and the booth fees. We aren’t strictly selling leather, either. My wife packages her own tea blends and topicals, and my daughter is a budding crystal dealer (it’s actually her business, I’m really just an artist-in-residence, so to speak, and handling d…

I'm opening my shop soon and was wondering what other shop owners do for payments. I would like to do all cash but in todays world it's not as convienant as it once was. On my website I'll be using WooCommerce and they take major credit cards. But need something for my brick and mortar store. Are people using something like Square or another POS? Do you accept Paypal, Cashapp or other similar apps?

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the love and support in my previous question. I have new ones. As I had discussed before, I'm trying to start a Leather Goods Business, with a capacity of 5000 handbags, 2000 portfolio bags, 50,000 wallets production capacity per month. That is the Target to achieve. But in order to achieve it, I have to start with just one pc of goods. So over the last 10 months, ive made (got made from a design studio) around 22 items of leather goods, Handbags, Wallets, Clutch Purse, Belt, POrtfolio Bag, Duffle Bag, etc. So a base range is ready. However i'm strapped for cash. in other words, i'm next to broke. But if need be I can go f…

I am gearing up to make some Farmers Markets and Craft Shows and I am having trouble with Price Tags. How is everyone adding price tags to their leather items for shows like this? Thank you all for your advice. I have learned a lot being on this forum.

For those interested in selling their leather products online, there is a dedicated market place getting up and running. It will be limited to handcrafted merchandise and avoid all the bulk made items that are listed on Etsy now. The shop setup is free and there are no commissions to list your items. Only a 6% commission on each sale. I am familiar with the owners of the site, but am not affiliated (other than listing my wares) with them in any way. Just thought it would be another avenue. Like I said, it is just starting up, but the owners are excellent at Search Engine Optimization (SEO), so I am sure in no time there will be some traffic. Here is the link.…
