I've read a few posts here, and I am starting to realize that product photography is ... hard. I have a couple of lackluster photos of the stuff I have made. Mostly just cell-phone camera pointed at a table, or on the floor. I am pretty handy with Photoshop though ... (well, Gimp, Inkscape and ImageMagick, really). Can I use crummy lighting and make up for it with fancy digital stuff (that I will have to re-learn how to do?) Attached are some MakeSupply "wrap" wallets I made, just photographed on the kitchen floor with no other compensation. I guess I could have gotten some posterboard and tried to make something easier to crop the background from.

Hello, My name is Onur. I am a software developer and engineer. I'd like to pick my master degree project about leather defects and how to detect them with a regular phone camera. For this reason, I need to train an artificial intelligence(AI) and I am planning to develop a phone app and let everybody to use it. But training AI needs too much visual data. That's where I need your support. Plus: I am open to all advices from valuable users of this website. I am planning to detect leather defects at the stage of "leather calcification" which I am not sure I translate it right to english. Thank you guys, I need maybe 1000's of photos but I believe this projec…

I must have taken hundreds of pictures of belts and guitar straps but I'm never happy with the results. Can anyone make any suggestions as to the best way to photograph long thin strappy things? Thanks, Ray

Harvard has posted at least a portion of some their photography courses online at Alison. Completely free, minus a 10-14 hour investment to complete the course. https://alison.com/courses/Digital-Photography If anyone has bought a digital camera in the last few years, check to see if that cd/dvd had photoshop elements on it. Very scaled back version of the full monty, but geared mainly toward digital photography in the amateur sense. Despite that, you should be able to get really good results nonetheless. Tob

I was at a resale shop the other day and saw a chair for sale with weaved seat and back. As a leatherworker and craftsman I instantly got the idea of building my own version of this chair and using leather for the weaved areas. What do you think? Any ideas? Thanks for reading my post!

I am on a mission to improve my photo quality for my website, social media and other advertising. I am currently using an iPhone and outdoor props, which is all bad in the winter in Northern Idaho. Lol. I am new to photography, but will be purchasing a DSLR and a good 50mm prime lense. My main question is lighting. I’ve seen some really nice light box setups, but being new, I’m unsure of what to get for the large items that I’ll be photographing. The majority of my items are gun belts and holsters. These items seem quite large for most light boxes that I’ve seen and I’m also concerned about getting proper angles of these products in a confined space. To make the situati…

I recently got a new toy so I thought I’d share a few shots with my new light box. First impressions are very positive it is working great; it has built in LED’s so no more setting up light tent and lights on stands etc. It only takes a few seconds to set up and apart from applying a custom colour profile in lightroom these photos have been cropped and nothing else.

Hello I was wondering if any of you had any tricks at photographing open wallets I've tried blue painters tape and it wasn't sticky enough I'm afraid to use something that may leave a mark on the leather. Any suggestions?

I’m currently thinking about trying to sell some of my stuff on Etsy so I thought I’d have a go at getting some better photos of my work. I’ve not currently got a Light Tent but one is on its way so for these I used a collapsible laundry basket which is similar to a light tent but the proportions are all wrong. I also used a set of table top lights like these These were taken with the lights a little too high so when I get my proper light tent I will try again with the lights lowered a little. Do these photos look like they will be ok for Etsy?

I'm looking for assistance with background changes with Gimp software. Someone on Facebook did this but didn't share how they did it. The white background is the original file and the black background is what I want to be able to do.
