  1. I only wax the tread as I'm going to use It. I would also use 100 percent pure beeswax. Beeswax will adhere to the thread better than beeswax that contains parafin or parafin. Just my way. Richard
  2. The new mauls look great. Good to see you back. What is the difference in the black and the brown that I have other than color? Richard
  3. Sorry! should have included his website for you, knipknives.com .
  4. I have used and own quite a few different head knifes including Doziers but for my money I would take "Knips" knives over any of them. I have 2 now and use nothing else. Terry makes quite a few different styles of knive so I'm sure he can make whatever you are looking for. I know that Bob Parks, Bob Klenda and Jesse Smith use his knives and have nothing but good to say about them. Terry is on the forum as Knipper and has posted photos and doesn't take over a year to make one Just my two cents, Hope it helps Richard
  5. Looking for a Sam Brown Button Hole Punch. Weavers shows one #65-2570 but the hole looks round and I have seen holes punched that are more of a tear drop to the slit. Any help would be appreciated Richard
  6. I believe Ron's is one of the only suppliers of the Farrow buckle, but not sure. One of the nice things is that you don't have to worry about losing the slide like you do with the Blevins Richard
  7. Contact the CSMA, they have a knife they are selling that I believe was designed by Jesse Smith and made by "Knip". This is by far the best knife I have ever owned. It sells for around 250.00 and takes about 4 to 6 weeks to get one. Richard
  8. Thanks for the help everyone but I just keep striking out. Maybe they are a thing of the past Richard
  9. Already tried Springfield and they couldn't help Has anyone got any other Ideas
  10. I am looking for a source for 7 ring snap ring hardware for day planners. Any help would be appreciated Richard
  11. Just received my two new brown mauls from Ed today, WOW!! I had the pleasure of using Bob Beards maul at one of his classes at Wickenburg 2 years ago just to find out that he no longer made them. What a disappointment that was, and I know a lot of people like me have been wanting them and trying to get Bob to make them. Well here is your chance to get as close as you can. Not only do these mauls react the same and have great balance but they are a work of art to boot. I could not wait to try them as soon as they arrived today. I had a lot of bargrounding to do and what a great feel these have, just what I've been wanting. If you haven't gotten in line for yours yet you better do it soon because as word gets around I'm sure Ed won't be able to keep up with the demand. Ed has photos of mine so maybe he will post them here. And remember you get what you pay for so do yourself a favor and order a least one you won't be sorry. This is not a paid advertisement but just my two cents worth. Thanks so much Ed. I could not be any happier and Bob will be glad to get me off his back. Richard Garner Hide Shop
  12. For stitching awls and blades go to Bob Douglas. His awl handle is about 65 dollars and the diamond blades around 25 dollars and you can get different sizes. I don't think anyone will argue the quality of Bob's tools. His number is 307-737-2222 dsctools@fiberpipe. net. Sheridan WY. If you plan on doing a lot of stitching this is the place to start Richard
  13. I spoke to Bob at the Wickenberg show a week ago and he tells me that even though there are many willing to pay the price he is having a hard time even finding the materials now so don't know if we will ever see them again Richard
  14. I found the real trick is trying to get the new anvils in. I contacted Osborne for help and they ask me to send them the rotary punchs I was working on and they would replace them for me but when all was said and done they sent them back with new anvils for me to install myself. Mine came out alright by punching them out but would presume you could drill them out as suggested also.

    Beveling

Here is a place where a good quality tool really makes a difference. If you look at a Barry King, Bob Beard or any of the pro quality tool makers bevelers you will see that the heel of the tool is rounded unlike lets say a craftool. This will help quite a bit to eliminate tracking as you can lean the tool back just a bit to help walk the tool. The moisture content of the leather is also very important and don't be in a hurry, take your time only advancing the tool 1/4 of the length of the tool with each impact, using the largest beveler you can for the area. Don't get discouraged as everyone has been there. Just my 2 cents worth Richard
  16. Have you checked out Barry King or Wayne Jueschke. They both carry steel beader blades Richard

    Maker Stamps

Brenda has made three stamps for me and worked with me on a pattern for each one. This lady is just the greatest to work with, she is fast and will work with you in every way she can to make sure you get what you are wanting. She has also done some lazering on leather for me and again could not ask for better service or been more pleased. I don't think you can go wrong with one of her stamps and if you did have a problem I'm sure she would make it right Richard
  18. I just spoke to the owner at QED yesterday and they have a light that is not on their web site that I ordered. It is hard wired and has two lights but they are not halogen so it will not create the heat and the need to be replaced. It was created for someone who does inlay on fret boards. A little pricey but I really beleive in their product and the folks there are great to deal with. Will post after I have a chance to use it. Richard
  19. How often would you go to an art gallery and find the artists signature on the back side ? The value of most art work is in the Maker although I agree with Bob the placement of your stamp on your work needs to be in good taste. Just my 2cents Richard
  20. Sorry to be so long in replying but just spent a week with Jesse Smith in Colorado trying to improve my skills. Just call the number on the add or web page and tell them you saw the add in Leather Journal Mag. I am going to order the hard wired this week for myself and send my old one back to Jesse. He uses a magnifying hood but found he likes this one even without the light as you still have peripheral vision. I do wear bifocals and have no problem wearing them with the techlight. The only thing I have found with the battery style is you don't realize as the batteries wear down that the light spot keeps getting smaller so you keep working wondering why you are not seeing well. Guess that may be caused by old age also. I do know that I would not work without one anymore it is one of my most important tools. Richard
  21. Another vote for Lazergiftcreation. Brenda will work with you untill you have what you want and at a price that won't break your bank. I have one of her stamps and she is currently making me 2 more. She is also doing some lettering on a leather plate for a Gerstner chest I have. She is more than reasonable, fast and a delight to deal with. Richard
  22. Thanks for the correction Tom. I just ordered enough to cover my carving and stamping table, 24x36. Sure saved a bunch of money, thanks to all. Just could not bring myself to pound on someones headstone. Richard
  23. Wow!!!!! Your work is truly an inspiration to us all. Only a few will ever reach the heights to which you have risen but it gives us all something to aspire too. I believe that your day as an Al Stohlman Award for Achievement winner is on it's way. For all of you who have not had the pleasure of metting Bob Parks in person he is truly a nice guy and a class act beyond his leathercrafting abilities. I had the pleasure of meeting him at Wickenberg this year when he dropped into an Al Gould Class and shared some of his experience with us (as he is always willing to do on this forum). Thanks Bob Richard
  24. Dear Johanna and Kate I for one just want to say Thank You for such a wonderful website. It gives us access to a wealth of knowledge and experience to share and learn from. I don't think we should lose sight of the main purpose of the forum. If this is the way the website looked when I signed up I would still have been just as happy. It takes money to keep thing rolling and advertising is the best way to do that. I also like being able to go to an advertisers website direct from here. I hope that more paying advertisers come on board. I personaly think things look fine and I'm just thankful for all the hard work and effort you put into it for us to use (For free might I add). Just my 2 cents worth, Richard
