Bob Parks has a great article about casing leather for tooling in the how to section. here is a link to it; Casing leather.
  2. Hi Kai! Welcome, you have come to the right place. There is a lot of experience here to gain some knowledge from. Let us see some pictures of your work when you have a chance. I lived in Erding for 3 years. Cheers, Tim
  3. I have a Barry King and this thread inspired me to order a 3/8 straight blade to go into it. I have to say i am happy with it but I don't do a lot of Sheridan style carving. His blades are really nice though and glide through the leather. I will have to watch this thread and see what others with more experience have to add.
  4. In I think the first book of the three book series by Stohlman on case making it shows how to make these handles and I think suggestions of what leather weight to use. I have used skirting leather and skived it when it needs to be thinner. That has been my method. I used tooling belly on one laptop case handle. It seemed okay and have not heard any negative feedback from it's owner after two semesters of use.

  6. From the album: Old past work

Steampunky feel costume. I made the top hat, the belt, holster, cowboy cuff watch, and the leather collar. I also modified some Tandy wing conchos to match the theme.

  9. Look in the yellow pages for Machinery riggers. They are the guys that move big stuff in factories and shops. if you have the $$ they will do it for you or at least maybe they can give you some helpful advice.
  10. I just got mine too and I put a stitch line down with my groover to follow and keep me on a even keel. I will have to try the creaser. I have been using the left presser foot on everything so far as that was what was on the machine when I got it. it is going to take a lot more thread and a lot more scraps to get in the practice I need to be really good.

      what a predicament!

  13. Well that is really awesome. You have really pushing the envelope of what can be decorated with leather. It really is beautiful work and #2 it brings your art into a room of the house that can always use more culture.
  14. I have circle templates. Barge cement can size and small rubber cement can size. I have a few drive punches cut in half too. and a strap end cutter. sometimes I have resorted to using my dividers to scribe a line that I cut to. You are off to a great start!
  15. If i won the lottery I would fill up on Barry King Tools! I have a few of his stamps and a swivel knife from him too. Such crisp details and great designs.
  16. I have my edges ready to be burnished. I have a few daubers that I have lit afire and burned them down to at least half their original size. This works well for me the burned daubers keep the amount of dye on hand in control and I don't get drips or run over.
  17. I think a layer of protective finishes all around will protect against the worst of it. I am still researching that part.
  18. Building on yesterdays momentum!

  19. Huh that is weird MissV. I just tried it and when I single click on my name or the arrow thingy it brings up the drop down menu and it stays until I select something from it. My picture/avatar will bring me right to my profile if I click on it. I am what they call computer illiterate, I think there are the wee people inside doing magic, so I am not the best to help you. I am still doing some repousse. I want to make a few decorative things for my saddle or the next one I might build. It is kind of fun and like stamping leather gets some tension out with all the hammering.
  20. Welcome to the forum! I tried repousse last november and it was quite similar in thought to my leather work so it was an easy transition. I love learning some new things! Click on the down arrow by your name and a drop down box will appear with "messenger" the message should be in there.
  21. Here is my two cents and the story of my sewing machine journey. I started with a WalMart Singer. Just something to sew canvas and light deersking together making pouches and stuff. Then I decided that I wanted something with more Ooomph. I bid on a used Gov't surplus machine online. I won and when I got it well it looked like it had been shoved out of a plane without a parachute and then laid in a salt plain for a year. so then I bought a used "industrial strength" machine locally. It had been set up to do upholstery leather and do it fast fast fast!!! It was near impossible to control and when it started acting up I had no one to help me out. It also didn't do the work that I was wanting to do now, holsters, stirrup bindings, chaps and such. It really was the wrong machine from the get go. I hadn't done a through job researching what I wanted and needed. I talked to a few people, I read all the forums and reviews. At the tradeshow I visited with the dealers. To me an important factor was the character of the dealer and the service after the sale. I did buy a cylinder machine and I am pleased as heck with it. I haven't used it for a long time,as I just got it, but two saddle bags, a belt lining and a sword scabbard later I can say I am not sorry for my choice in machine. it has excess capability but I won't be wanting for a bigger machine in the future that way. True to form the dealer I bought from was honest and followed up on the sale with above and beyond customer service. So if there is a trade show near you go and check out who is there and talk to them. Or give Steve or Kevin a call. There is a lot of good info here too.

I can't take credit for it though. It was from a comic strip someone sent me about a raccoon.
