  2. You can back the leather with some lining leather cow( veg tan or chrome) or pig. Pig skin, doesn't have much stretch to it . Using thin pig, 2 oz. or less in thickness will not stiffen you leather very much. Frank
  3. If just making a replica of the feet was what is required to make shoes and boots then why would there be last? It doesn't work. Take a shoe or boot making class and you will find out why. I am not trying to be smart ass about this but You will not understand untill you try to make some footwear. Frank English Frank English custom Boots

  8. I use to use a certain rubber cent on my boots untill they changed the formula and it smells terrible. The oder never went away. If you want to save your pieces take them apart, use a blow dryer to warm the glue and pull the pieces apart. You can get a grit cleaning stick, this is rubber crepe used to clean sanding belts, at the hardware store and rub off the glue. If there is still some smell left try a light sanding. Try rubbing the crepe one way on the leather, it may take some time but it will come off. Frank
  9. I have made some changes to the boot classes. I will no longer offer 2 week classes except for an exceptional reason. Classes available - 2 weeks and 12 weeks. Cost of 4weeks is the same that I charged for the 2 week class. I have been accepted as a Montana Eligible Training Provider. This is through the Workforce Investment Act. Montana has reciprocity with other states providing funds to participants in training classes. Stropping

You can use mild soap and warm water to clean it. Don't soak it, rinse off all the soap by whiping off with a damp cloth. Let it dry and redress it. Murphy's oil soap should work.
  13. Just search the internet for arts and crafts shows and some will come up and you pick. Try the source book, it may come up when you do your search. The book has hand made shows around the country. type in source book and it should come up.
  14. It is twisted right and left because of the way the machine shuttle wraps the main thread around the bobbin thread for the lock stitch
  15. I use all leather weight lifting gloves, works fine and if I am pulling needles I put a pair of latex gloves on first under the gloves and can grip the needles. The length of the fingers of the gloves cover where the string wraps around my hand. Frank
  16. Nice creativity and expression of color
  17. The 31-15 is a great machine, I have 2 of them. Yes it is worth fixing up and if it is set to sew you will be very happy with it. You can still get all the parts you ever need. This machine is one that many boot makers prefer and look for. If you need parts you can call the following places; Ralph's power Sewing machine Company, 1 800-525-0330 in Denver, Co. or Gateway 1800-752-7897 in Illinois. There is one more but my brain just froze up. Frank
  18. The tool on the right is called a welt knife but is not used to cut welts on boots and shoes. It is used to trim the heel rand . The rand is the top layer of the heel on a shoe or boot. It lays on the leather about 90 degrees out from the boot and it has a lip or fence that allows the blade to reach only so far. Lay it on the rand and with pressure go around the heel to trim, level, it. Frank.
  19. To take the dye off of your hands get yourself some hair color remover sold in beauty supply stores. Will also take it out of clothing but you run the risk of discoloring the material. Can also use it on finished leather carefully. Trial and error on finished or unfinished leather, too much and there goes your finish color.

  21. Mark my friend said you could get patterns for the leggings from tandy , Montana Leather in Billings. Someone on this site may have a pattern for you. He also said just build them like chaps, measure at the ankle, mid calf and widest part of the thigh to get the fit correct and do fittings. Frank
