  1. that thin type of cardboard is what we are talking about, I never even thought of cereal boxes (thnx Pete), but thats exactly it. I never bought any, but I did make the mistake of that thicker stuff, horrible to use for this..dont do it. I mostly use packaging tape, but like I said, that will not allow a nice finish or even dye.
  2. Gotcha. and Im sure artistic license gets used especially with the...add ons, as I am sure in the day, things were hobbled together as needed and a lot of that would not have survived. I read a book on historical leather a few years back, and although I cant remember the book title, I do remember a section on gun leather and the reality of what it was vs what you see in the movies. the final word was what was shown clint eastwood wearing in the outlaw josey wales, was the most common, if you had leather at all. most outlaws didnt have the money for leather holsters, and certainly not the high fashion stuff that was not so much available. it was interesting. but I really like your rigs and the differnent styles of adding items. the cross draw Im going to make for my son's revolver will be a little of this. thanx for sharing your cool stuff.
  3. nice work, some unique looking pieces. you say period correct? what do you use to reference than, just curious. I really like the two right hand draw rig. I want to make a cross draw for my sons 22 revolver and a knife to .
  4. Mike, I also have done a lot of artwork in my past with lots of different mediums and such. There is an element Im not seeing here when you talk about the shop. You may have a lot of the abilities learned to draw, cut, stamp, and create some nice pieces, but what you have to remember is that all that, has to get put onto something viable, usable, like the cuffs you mention. This all takes assy skills that may or may not be something you had in the past. What I have found is that t his assy work, and whatever product(s) you decide you want to sell out of your shop, is every bit as important as how pretty the art is, or design of the piece. This will take practice. albeight, some fast than others just dependant on their aptitude. I have seen a pile of folks close businesses here, that knew what the heck they were doing. so just be careful and plan it out some. not trying to be a nay sayer, I think if you love it and can do it, you should and Im assuming your talking down the line a ways as far as a shop. but get some serious skill down before considering committing to a shop or over spending on gear.
  5. the thick corregated cardboard does not work well with this. your really looking for really thin single sheet type of stuff. the tape works fine, packing tape, but it leaves a glue residue, so you need to remember that if say you are doing a belt without a lining, and you expect to dye it. the dye wont take well. Pete has the answer on the glue.
  6. im in ft mill, just south of charlotte. I just met a honey in anderson...just give me a reason to come over there lol.
  7. Doesnt really matter which side of the aisle you have decided to live with, whenever they talk about reduction in taxes, they have an alternative to make it up and some, and they will. there are hundreds, if not thousands of little facebook pictures and sayings about all this, I bet most of them are even true. The reality is, we can not make the government live within its own means, like we can at home, and many of us struggle with that as it is. But I think what really is setting people off is, no matter how hard they work at being fiscally responsible at home, the government is slowly but surely, finding ways to take more and more of a percentage. Somtimes I feel like I should expect sheriff nottingham to come knocking at my door every week. I dont think I will see it in my life time, but I suspect a radical change in the us to come. I hope it doesnt happen via violence, but it wouldnt surprise me either. We have become such a country of consumers instead of builders (usually not this type of group though, im talking outside of creators and producers). The politicians need to live within the same means as the rest of us, same rules as well. This be in office two years and get benis the rest of your life is sham for the rest of us. but they wont, because they are all on the same page in that little group.
  8. Very very nice. so clean looking. If you dont mind, could you explain your dye process here. so you dyed everything w/ fb dark brown. that means the entire rig was all really on color, after you wiped all that down, then you added fb dark brown antique, and thats what got in the grooves of the stamping to make that darker looking, after you wiped that coat off?
  9. Agree with cyberthrasher. this looks like to me the "yellow" is standard veg tan, if this is older, that could simply be natural color ages, and it will do that. Could be staddle tan as well, if not ages leather. You would apply the saddle tan on the raised area, you would put a protective coat on that, then you would dye the background. I dont agree that this is digitally applied or lasered, I have seen plenty of folks here that are plenty good enough to get that look by hand. my opinion only.
  10. Nice looking seat, very clean and matched to the bike very well.
  11. Really like the design and quality of the build. I have a question. I noted that the leaves are green yet have some brown in there. the green is paint right, is the brown? or is that dye? how did you apply to get this dual color. I personally havent done any colors, but may shorty and leaves were one thing, so Im anxious to understand this.
  12. From the album: 1st album

this was the first one i did with a liner. it finished nicely. got a spot of stain on it though. lacing went well. the art I did myself to the owners specs, I say specs, she just stated stuff she liked and this is what I did. at this writing I hadnt mailed it yet.
  13. Very nice, may have to look into that, Im a newbie in comparison, and have been asked to do a few more holsters, this just looks so nice, might need to inquire. thanks for your post. Bob
  14. They all look very very nice. I have a question on the belt. the dye work you have done throughout all of these are very rich in color and even. I noted on the inside of the belt, although not lined, its fairly dark, but doesnt look stained or dyed. Natural veg tan is so much lighter. how did you get this effect or is it the type of leather you ordered from? just looks so nice.
  15. I have seen a lot of holster postings on this site. some I pay more attention to than others, but this really stands out. Im suspecting its the matching grips to, but the whole project is soooo clean. very very nice.
  16. Thanks for taking the time to show this, very very nice. I have a question, the tool you used for making the holes,,,what tool is that or more directly, the mfg. I only have mostly Tandy tools, and Ive only been working on things a bit over a year, so the common tools have generally worked out. but not so much this, so I am interested in that tool. my lace punching tool is also wearing. so I am thinking where ever you got this tool, they have others I may need to review. Im getting some request and need to step up my game a little. thanks again. Bob
  17. looks great!! the airbrushing gives the seat a very tatoo looking style.. very nice.
  18. I dont agree with Dirtclod, and this is an open forum for all to see and do... if that person doesnt want to look, dont open the thread. You never know who your going to help with any single post. I think the request to not post is unfair, its unreasonable and a bit selfish. and you may even lose some help. someone may see one post over another and have help with some you didnt even notice. thats my 2 cents.
