  1. I found out (and it was just discussed not long ago) that the Tandy beginner kits, have inferior stamps as well. the same type of stamp you get in the kit, is inferior to the one you will buy in the store. want proof. take a magnet up against the one in the kit, you will find no attraction, try it on the same part in one of the cubbies at the tandy store, will stick. its the metal. I bent the crud out of a couple of mine, they replaced them for free, with ones from the store, problem solved. I wouldnt give to much information here, as Im a fairly newbie to so dont want to steer in the wrong direction. but what I would say is, use up the kit, see what you like and dont like, and go from there. My first visit to tandy had me buys some very unnecessary things for a beginner, so I am hestitant to just buy anything when I go there , however, I met a different guy that works there, and he would tell me six ways to do anything, from cheap to expensive, my choice,,,,thats what you look for. Bob
  2. like the look, but having never made one or wore one, I am curious is to how it looks in use. I like the way the hardware looks to.
  3. In addition to what Bill said, and I couldnt agree more, the other thing that comes to mind is that in a world/time where everything is tried tobe produced to perfectness as if manufactured and all materials just right, its nice to see and in this case as Bill points out, to remember that it simply doent have to be that. The rustic final look of this piece makes me think of that. do I NEED to buy just this, do HAVE to have just that. Reminds me to not be so concerned about all that and just enjoy doing, or the ability to be able to do it. I understand that might not work as a business model, sure, but we aint all in this for the business,,,well Im not :D very well done.
  4. Im jumpin on the band wagon with the questions. but that is one nice piece of leather and its so cleanly put together. likin it.
  5. yes it does help. I was thinking once I get everything decided, I need to buy extra lacing. Personally I plan on doing a mexican round lace pattern, and will need quite a bit and know its more expensive, but I hear its worth it.
  6. sorry I will not be much help, ran across this and will be following it as I am planning something very similar. Mine is for a goldwing. I also bought a second seat, uncovered it to measure, but have not decided on my foam core parts yet. but the links on this topic help greatly and appreciate all the imput. I have a comment or two, but not having done this or even sat on one similar to these, my remarks should be taken as uneducated. Benlilly seat looks really nice, but it looks to me that the lacing is raised enough that it would dig into your thigh. one of the reasons I am making a custom seat, is to change my sitting position and the wing is very wide seat at the thighs. I want to trim that down, and doing what was done here, seems like it might not be a good thing. but dont really know. Stealfdawgs pic seems to nice and flat. Steve has a good variety of looks but I am wondering if the single X style lacing is enough over high usage and time. in any case, looking forward to the progress on this,,,, kinda makes me ansy to get going with mine. I havent even picked out my leather yet, lol. but like you I also plan on accessories, I am thinkin the seat, a gadget holder forward, a round leather case for on top of my big back pack, and I think I m going to buy one of those racks you see goldwings have on the back that carries a cooler, not a trailer, but like a bike rack. make a box for the cooler to fit in, but make the box old timey lookin. of course all this to match. anyway, I can dream. good luck. and post pics.
  7. Now this is taking one simple ole Tandy design pattern (well, thats where I saw it anyway, its prolly older than that) and doing something exceptionally nice. really nice
  8. Like a lot of the other comments. I think the design is simple and clean, she is sure to like it. I mean, what wife wouldnt want a bunch of hearts given to her..... just sayin. nice work.
  9. Oh, I think the simplistic color works great for this design. It looks very very nice. Oh, I think the simplistic color works great for this design. It looks very very nice.
  10. gotta agree with these comments. really really nice
  11. Somehow I missed this post previously. Your seats are just freakin awesome. youve got me a bit nervous now. I'm getting ready to construct/reconstruct a seat for my gold wing (base seat should be here today). Im afraid it will look more like the hard seat you had to rebuild cuz it was hard, than not. I sew some stuff, but dont have a machine, so my plan is to lace everything. I also plan on accent pieces around the bike to match. but your sewing and your beads looks so nice, I know I wont have anything that looks that good. Im a bit envious. really nice stuff. pics of how you do that bead would be good., I d like to see that.
  12. very clean looking. nice design. I have to wonder if the color will stay on a bike that gets used often. just curious, doesnt take away from the seat work. its super nice.
  13. Bobby, thanks for that post, really really helpful. as it is, I havent had any guns in the house for years. as luck would have it (luck dependant on your point of view) , my son has been interested in guns in a serious way since he was very young, now 11. I take him to an inside range, rent and fire a multitude of types. using safety and just getting him to understand the mechanics of the different guns, sizes and how they react. I keep telling him he cant have one till he is 18, the reality is, I am preparing to buy him a 22 revolver very soon. Ive always wanted a few guns to go shoot. protection and targets. I think now is the time and starting down that road. these links are real helpful in what I can and cant do, at least it answers some questions and gets me to the state laws as well. he and I also plan on taking further motorcyle rides (golldwing) to places, be nice to know what the other states laws are. not that I would carry, but may want to and would be nice to have that info. so thanks for that. )
  14. really nice stuff spinner. I especially like the last two, on the first post. the pin up is just amazing. the lacing and color of the one up from that, geeze.
  15. I like the design. the artwork is good, the text on top is really good. I think the impressions could be a bit deeper. it would have given better depth and a better contrasting in color if you cased it long enough. Overall it looks like a dang nice seat.
  16. I have seen this as well, and it is a very very nice seat. but Im suspsecting in most states, you get pulled over just so they can make sure there aint anything in it.
  17. No apologies necessary my friend. its all good and I appreciate all the help, and it IS my first Wing, but no, certainly not my first bike. but ya never know, you might hit on something I havent thought of,,,,happens aaaalll the time lol. Bob
  18. Yeah, I have a pair of Kuryakyn hgwy pegs and have adjusted them all sorts of ways. the issue with those is, you have to get your feet way out past the fairing. Now, Im 5-9 +, not short, but not tall, and let me tell you, that is stretch. its almost as hard to reach the damn things as not lol. and you have to twist your knee around the edge of the fairing ( I have a 1500) and thats where my hurts are. you can also get floorboards as well, but there is only like 2" available from the exist peg position, and the engine. I know they have to relocate brakes and shifter but Im thinking, where the heck to? maybe a heel toe shifter. a lot of GW folks dont like em. I loved mine. so I may have to spring for a set, but again, not cheap either. Wings are kinda like harleys, you want something, we got it,,,,how much money you got left in your pocket? and I hear floorboards make real difficult to flat foot. my pegs as they are dig into my ankle when Im not wearing riding boots. but if you dont, I swear its just gonna fall right over. never dropped any of my 20 bikes, including my hd/s, Ive dropped this th ing twice already. geeze. I used to love my floorboards on my heritage springer classic (shoulda never let that bike go). but the hd is skinnier, waaaaay skinnier, so its a lot more relaxed. I am a memeber on the GW forums, thats where Im getting the seat. gotta a buddy gonna send me one for zip, just mailing cost.....thats a reeeeall good price. lol. im goint to take before pics tonight so I havethem. he just emailed me and said seat will be on its way tomorrow or so. Im 80%confident I can get this under control. but ya know, moving back to an hd, or maybe a victory, aint the end of the world either
  19. Thanks for all the feedback folks. thats a bit to digest. I will spend the next couple weeks lookin around and deciding but you all have given me plenty more to consider. Bobby, sounds like that really is the way to go and what I was thinking. so Im gonna call around and check out those sites and figure out what to get. but I thought a base of sometime of strong material and gel would be best. didnt think about a softer pad ontop of the gel, thats interesting and right now really leaning towards that. Its going to get a lot of use, anyone on a GW can tell you, they ride them alot and they ride them far. I mean, Ive only had mine a bit over a month and im just shy of 3k miles. and only made one trip. so I better make something that is going to last a while. Im excited about doing it, but a bit apprehensive. thanks all. Bob
  20. Welcome to the forums, from another S Carolinian. (ft mill).
  21. what I have going on is, I bought a used Goldwing about a month ago. I have owned many bikes over the years, was looking for protection so I can commute deeper into the year, plus take my son on some longer trips/rides. I wanted something that would be comfortable as my commute is a little over 120miles a day. the goldwing seem to fit the bill. I test rode a few and settled on one. its a great bike as bikes go. however, I have had some lower back problems over the last year, and this bike, well it aint helpin. im not used to the legs tucked underneath you, and for wing, thats how you ride it. first two weeks, my knee felt like it was on fire. so I have two choices. try to change the conditions, or sell the bike. so I did a little fooling around and think that if I can get my seat position back a few inches and higher a few inches, that would be enough. so I found a used seat on line, that I will rebuild or recover in a custom fashion amongst other custom leather Im going to make for it., and I simply have a pad I sit on till I get this done. I think I know what I want to do, but as I read through all these posts, I see the different foams and stuff, but what I cant find is, where do you get it all? the one Im getting, is chopped up, but its cheap. mostly I wanted the pan. I took some of the generic information on the threads and looked around the web, but all I can seem to find is these large industrial sites. onto the question... So if I want to buy just enough foam to do my seat, and look at variable options of types of foam material, where does one go to look, or buy at such a small amount? or am I just reading past this information? before I start work, I plan on taking pics so I can post the before and after seat, plus anything else I do ( I really want to make a custom leather clad cooler box that hangs off the back, there is a trailer recept there) and think I will cover my wind wings, and make a dash pad (its wood grain right now, and tooo much of that). so anyway. can anyone point me to where to buy some foam? thanks in advance, Bob
  22. very nice. I like how clean and uniform everything looks. Bob
