  1. this is a beaut. i wish i had the room and the cash. i'd toss a bid in on it. i have a brother in durham....it could save shipping costs.
  2. three words JD: feibing's oil dye. use it and you won't have a probem.
  3. those cuts are smooth as a school marm's leg.

o.k.....here goes. i think that they're really cool. you've done a real nice job on them. i like the design and the way it looks on the horse.
  5. sounds really cool! i wish i were independently wealthy, with no strings to tie me down, about 25 yrs. younger.....and so on. really. it sounds like a great opportunity for someone.
  6. whoa! sweet and well executed!! i have several ideas as to wood forms, but i don't have the tools to even begin. i know they are so useful. the stohlman books have drawings showing how to mold leather by hand (which is what i've been doing), but the pictures look so much easier than it really is.
  7. the grinding wheel will, in fact scorch leather if you're not careful (ask me how i know). but it won't clog up as you might think. i've been able to do a real nice job with mine. it works way better as you go up in leather thickness. gotta get me a belt sander.
  8. i know the problem that you are describing. in stohlman's book on making leather cases, he shows a toiletry bag for men. they are basically made from leather pieces that are "c" shaped but different sizes. yet, when sewn together, they mate up without puckers or pinches. in a nutshell, i don't know how to figure out what the dimensions need to be to make these two parts come together. you might have to make templates out of paper and do a trial and error thing. so, i know what your dilemna is, but i can't help (he says as he's pounding his head on the desk).
  9. well, it was worth getting out of bed because i just learned something today - how to sharpen an edger. i've been trying to do it with a jeweler's file and no joy. thanks for enlightening me, gaddabout. jeweler's on a string? cool!
  10. sounds like it's chrome tanned because of the gray center - not begin struck all the way through.
  11. yup - some good ideas. nice thread. i just re-dyed a friend's bag for her. it was a nice black one with a tiny bit of wear. i looked it over real well and noticed it was a coach - and it had great hardware. i asked where she got it. she said at a garage sale for - wait for it - 5 bucks. i gotta remember that next time i need linings or clasps or whatevers.
  12. sweet! that's a real nice piece, troop. a nice heavy divider and it looks like a couple of pockets, too. you used some upholstry leather for the lining it looks like. i'm dying to make an attorney's briefcase with a divider like you've got. i'm thinking maybe two dividers for the one i want to make.
  13. well, this proves it IS good for something. those collars are really cool! a real neat effect.
  14. jvk - you might want to post this in the saddlery section. it might get a lot more traffic than in this section.
  15. i've been wanting to buy from ohio travel bag because i've seen them linked to many requests for hardware items. they won't sell to individuals? i love their stuff and need to place an order, but that might be impossible.
  16. wow! that is gorgeous! got pics of the inside?
  17. that's a nice job on the papercraft. you're gonna hate to toss 'em when the job is finished. LOL have you used lexan before as a stiffener? i have thought about it, but the stuff will crack if bent too far. something to think about - and i'm going to expirement with (and it might be cheaper, too). i'm going to try laminate countertop material. it's only about 1/16" thick and is very stiff. i priced a 4x8 sheet of white at home depot at around 42 bucks. it might be cheaper than lexan for the same amount of material. you're goint to post pics after the job is done......riiiight?
  18. definitely line the cover - maybe with some kind of stiffener fabric and then possibly some light pigskin. also stitching around the perimeter of the flap will finish it nicely. or you could add an outside pocket with a zipper to the flap. more storage, heavier flap.
  19. also interested in colors.
  20. josh - do a google search for enco. i think they're out of nevada here in the states. it seems like they might have something along the lines that you're looking for.
  21. that machinie is beautiful! and so is your work. talk about big thread....looks like rope!
  22. that's well done........and we're gonna want to see those quivers, too.
  23. you can get the leather from tandy - if you haven't bought any before, that would be the easiiest place to start. as for info on making that cup, look at the "historical reenactment" section of this forum and there's a tutorial on how to do it.
  24. this is awesome!! what a cool idea.
  25. i'm getting some things together to make an attorney's briefcase and i was wondering if anyone on the forum has made one? if so, please let me know.....along with some pictures. this will push my abilities a bit, but i'm sure i can do it.
