My main bench is 12 feet long 36 inch wide and 38 inch high, so i can lay out a whole side to work on. I have a Smaller cutting table, that me gram gave to my grandad for there 25th anniversary in the 30's. It is 36 inch table but it is about 8 inch thick. It is a solid end cut maple top. So it is solid for pounding on.

Has anyone Gold foiled stamped a Logo into Ostrich? I have never done ostrich, and the company i am making some articles up for want their Logo gold foiled stamped in. Cowhide, no problem. I have tried all sorts of temps on machine, Several different gold foils, Even blind stamping does not work that well. I have glued backing onto the leather and nothing gives me the clean stamp i am use to as in cowhide. I am wondering if because of the makeup of the hide it is not going to work... The "scraps" i am practicing on is bad enough to waste, def not trying on articles until i can get it how i want it... So thought i would see if anyone here has had success with ostrich. Thank you

Yours is def interesting to read... My machines came from the Mcbrine luggage factory a long time ago.. They made leather gladstone bags, rawhide wrapped cases. At one point i know they were making guitar cases for gibson ( i think was that brand) so they will sew through plywood and pretty much anything else needed to sew. Cases like... Everyone called him Mister J ( the owner of mcbrine) When i meet him he was well into his 90's, was a very kind soul. Honour and integrity was very high in his world... Now a days, everything is made off shore, but when these machines were used to make up cases, they were made to last... I use mine when i can not get other machines to sew what i want to sew... I can drop a hat box on it and sew the binding on without even thinking. They are great machines...

I have "thousands" of hooks and awls kicking around.... Okay, maybe not quite that many.....but prob couple hundred or so... But will pull them out and see if they will work on your machine/ I also have the manual for the machines that tell you how/what you need as well as parts lists for machine... Not sure how to send you a copy... Most of machines are from 1870-1925 which suits me Just well..... computers, i do what i need on themmmmmmmmm

Way back in the 1930's grandad picked up a 6 foot chunk of train track. Have been using that chunk of track for the last 85 years of leather work. Bit heavier than your chunk of iron but same idea..... If making up things that are deep ie: 4 feet high, it allows to access the bottom area ,no problem at all... It will outlast me and still look like it did from way back then....

What sewing machines sew 12oz/5mm leather?
leathersmyth replied to Curlywolf's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Seeing that you are in the UK....Pearson stitcher might be what you are looking for. British united shoe # 6 other name. Yes, they are getting on in age, but can still pull a Beautiful stitch. They can pretty much sew anything you throw at them. I have sewn a Inch of leather on mine. They sew thinner no problem as well. Mine is still a peddle stand but i like, because i can go as slow or fast as i want and get a good leg work out at the same time... -
Rivets - rapid vs. tubular vs. double cap
leathersmyth replied to epiphanist1248's topic in Hardware and Accessories
I use all types, depending on what i am making. Double caps look nice because both sides are clean and finished... The tubular are Much stronger. Tubular come in nickle, brass, black, antique so they can match with the hardware that is on the thing i am making.I use the same colour washer on the back. I prefer them over copper rivets because i think give a "cleaner" look on the back side and with the rivet set it is one/two hits with hammer and are done. But you need All the sizes of rivets because you can not cut to length. Also there are a few different diameters of shanks as well as heads on the tubular rivets, so if i am using on locks, will use smaller ones with the smaller heads.Splits work great but tubulars have more holding power. You can either use a "cap" for the legs of split to grab onto or have the legs curl into the leather. The double caps can not be counted on to never letting go, so you can not use when you need lots of holding power. Just depends what you are making, the look you are going for.- 8 replies

Looking for this style briefcase pattern
leathersmyth replied to bylinesupplyco's topic in Patterns and Templates
If you go on their web site they have pictures of the bag. Pretty much all you would need to make up a bag exactly like that if you wanted. But by making it yourself, you can custom make it to what ever size you wanted. They say a picture is a thousand words, and the pattern is right there for you. I have been making bags for 40 years so to me it is nothing to recreate the style of a bag from a picture. -
