  1. Well, there you go. You found a fault in an existing product, showing a need for a new product which you have the ability to produce. Now, get to work on that lathe and let's see the results
  2. Hey, what else are you going to do when you sit in front of 4 19" monitors for 8 hours a day?? The day in the life of a network admin, A short animation by Cyberthrasher ....... ...........................
  3. Here are some good examples of "working" bags here. Granted, these are all repro (couldn't find any pictures of the real thing). Some of them are beaded, but you can tell the ones that were designed for work and the ones that were designed for show. http://www.missionde...icine-bags.html another quick search showed more of what I was really looking for. You can see how yours fits right in there. I just noticed this one has instructions on how to make some of the items too. So, if you're asked to similar stuff there are some more ideas. http://www.nativetec...ch/pouches.html
  4. I'm not much for cowboy themes, but that's really nice. I love the coloring too.
  5. Looking great. My Mom and Grandmother would love them (we're all from the Spokane Tribe in NW Washington), so if that makes you feel better about the lack of beads. Actually, you might be amazed at how many traditional working items weren't all that adorned with beads. A little bit, but it was always more about function.
  6. I like it. Are you doing anything else to the other side?
  7. Excellent plans!! And I was going to ask how big that area is next to your finger (before seeing the finger shot). Makes my rabid butterflies seem like childsplay BTW - I have to admit that the actual feathers are my favorite part of that portion - as long as we're just looking at the craftsmanship
  8. Man, I definitely grew up in the wrong area. I was out studying all that stuff on my own after a failed apprenticeship with an idiot (found out he was using - in the shop at that). Now you keep on coming up with cool stories of meeting all the people I've only read about. So, did you stick with the 5 oz leather? I'm assuming you did since I haven't seen you start over yet. Trying to get a feel for the actual depth on that side shot.
  9. That's sad. I forgot all about those things, even after the Walnut slab reminded me of it.
  10. Lathe - yet another one of those things I want once I have a place to put it. Don't know if you've read of Spinner's information on burnishing or not. It's geared toward edge, but the principals of the burnisher should apply to this project as well. http://www.leatherburnishers.com/BurnisherFAQ.html
  11. Don't sweat it. I'll just scour the pages here and start "editing" together your instructional book until you can get some crib midgets trained to pick up some of the production work I templated my current project once by measuring and wing dividing - failed (realized it after I had it cut out then scanned the outline to work on designs) Used that failed outline, eyeballed the many necessary repairs, increased size - PERFECT So, the lesson here is to remember that the human eye is a very complex system. If you stare at something long enough and get the "it should be good enough" attitude out of your head, your eye will pick up on the slightest imperfections, as long as you just trust it. I just keep seeking perfection to the point of not having any material left
  12. I think you nailed it. The soapstone probably looks darker for the reason you stated. Best results would definitely be the walnut. Once I saw that sitting there I started thinking about Spinner's burnishers. I like the Dremel attachment idea, but I think the best, most professional look is going to come from the walnut. We just need somebody to make a large surface burnisher that's attachable to a drill or dremel so you don't have to kill your arms doing it.
  13. Well, you can see how tiny it is. So, careful is the key. I went through and did most of the inverted beveling with my small modeler then followed it up with the swivel beveling blade (that's where most of that smooth shine comes from). Did each half of the wing separately and left the dividing line until they were both done so I could really press down and make sure the top wing was lower then the bottom. Then once I'm satisfied with the inside, I go round off the edges with the modeling spoon so it's not so rigid looking.More info then you wanted, but I think the total process there is what really created that look.
  14. "D" is the loneliest letter..... Sorry. Couldn't resist.
  15. Butterflies - you are not my friends.

  17. Cool. You have me intrigued about the outcome.
  18. That's why I wasn't sure about what would happen. Sorry I didn't catch the fact that you were using water. Do you have any pictures or anything of what you're trying to accomplish. Maybe something completed by someone else? I haven't done anything like that so I'm having trouble picturing what the outcome should be.
  19. I love how good Springfield's people are. Anybody else would just ship it without the out of stock parts. They take the time to call and make sure they're treating you to your expectations. What more can you ask from an online vendor?

    1. DoubleC

      DoubleC

Allen I had to call them the other day and talked with D'Ne', no that's not quite the punctuation marks but a sweet heart of a kid. I ordered Fiebings from them because of the way it was worded I thought it was watered based. I mix and match stuff all the time, and this said 'mix your own colors' whatever. Well you can only mix it with another spirit based, and she's sending me the two bottles of water-based for nothing. I offered to ship these back, but she said to ke...

  20. I would get some scrap and experiment with that technique on nice wet leather, preferably the same leather you're using for the pouch. Different levels of moisture will give you different shades - the wetter the darker. Now, I don't know how this will apply to what you're doing, but it's what causes the burnishing color in tooling.
  21. Yeah, I tried selling mine, but it was too damaged for Rock and Roll to take the offer .
  22. You know, with the shortage of hours I'm feeling in the day lately, I just might start doing the same pretty soon. Sucks having a full time career outside of the other stuff you need to get done. I'm off for some of that beauty sleep now. I'll see if you were able to keep away from the door panel when I head to work in the morning
  23. There's a high-res on my facebook page. I'll send the link in email. It's 8/9 oz though. Aren't you supposed to be sleeping or something?
  24. I like it. Reminds me of an old piece my mom had on the wall when I was a kid.

    Just starting up the border.
