  1. I have to second Katsass's recommending the "0" size needles. I bought some 0 and 00 not knowing anything about them and 00 is too large for me to use...if anyone wants a 10 pk of 00 harness needles let me know and I'll give them to you. There is one piece of equipment that i personally could not make holsters without and use way more then the drill press. It's a 4x36 belt sander. I use it for everything from truing up the holster halves after cutting them out to final shaping and even edge beveling...i would be dead in the water without it. I don't think Hermann oak makes double shoulders/backs. I believe they only offer sides so that would mean single shoulders and backs. At least that's all I can get from site sponsor Springfield Leather. I'm looking forward to seeing you post up pics of your first projects here. One of the things I really like about this site is watching people improve with each project they do.
  2. Just to satisfy my own curiosity I have to ask...did you get a side or a back? Unless I'm missing something (most likely) a back is just a back...no?
  3. This is a different pattern but I'm pretty sure Tucker doesn't antique his "stamping" at least mine isn't. I think the slight underexposure of Eaglestrokers image just makes everything appear a little darker.
  4. I'll just add a little bit to what Marine mp said...I have only burnished my edges while still wet from the vinegaroon process and get great results. Is there any chance something could have gotten mixed in with the vinegaroon solution? I have no clue how the oil on steel wool would effect anything, or if you even used steel wool, but if you did, did you make sure to degrease it first?
  5. You can always use paper to mock up a holster to a certain degree. Other then that the belly cut is the cheapest cut of a hide...It's usually too stretchy and inconsistent in thickness to make a decent holster out of but i hear some people use it to work out the kinks in a new pattern before using a better cut of leather. Other then that you should be able to find decent holster quality leather in the $4.00-$7.00 a square foot range. A lot of places will sell you a single shoulder which is usually about 4-6 Sq Ft. of material.
  6. I picked up a couple frog skins and was thinking of using them on a holster as overlay trim pieces. One of the skins came with a couple of abrasions that wore through the surface on the grain side and makes me question it's durability. Was this skin handled extraordinarily rough at some point or is frog skin not all that durable?
  7. Here's a recent thread with some Holster "baking" information. http://leatherworker...=1 This sites search feature does a good job if you can use the right keywords. I remember reading this thread and "toaster oven" was mentioned, so that's what I searched for. Hope this helps, good luck.
  8. I asked a similar question just a few posts below, http://leatherworker...showtopic=34337 , in which people offer up a few sources to try. I haven't ordered from any of them so if you do please let me know how they work out for you.

  18. If you opted to use the tea bath...should you let it dry before the applying the vinegaroon?
  19. I like the color, I don't know if I can pick out the streaks but I like the lighter and darker areas personally. To me it looks just like a good user holster should. I also like that you Incorporated a little bit of tooling. I agree with Wizard and think you should try to follow the trigger guard with the stitch line, that's the first thing that jumped out at me. The last thing I would suggest is...try to get those angles rounded off more. With my first couple holsters I too wanted sharp crisp lines and have to really make a conscious effort to round them off. But rounded contours really do look better once you can bring yourself to do them. Looks good, keep up the good work!
  20. I don't have a business/business name. If I did get a sellers permit/tax ID I'd just list it under my name. I started making a couple holsters just for myself and am thinking that I may try to sell a couple and if I do I want my name on them somehow. Just using my initials would be good but I don't want some plain ol block letters. I would want something with a little pizazz. But even when it comes to my initials I'm so uncreative it's embarrassing. I'm so uncreative that my user name is my first name and last initial, as is my email address . MSH would be the initials I'd use. I've tried to intertwine them in various ways but...well...I started this thread because I didn't get anywhere. Thanks for that Mike...I've tried most of that...using hobbies, likes, ECT. I've even given it time! I used to make custom knives, oh 15 years ago, and tried to come up with some sort of name/makers mark starting way back then...I settled on the oval with my name and city/state for that...
  21. The quality of my holsters is starting to improve and I want to start stamping them with a makers mark. The problem is I am totally clueless on a design. I do know I want something other the oval with my name and city/state inside it. I've spent many hours looking through other people logos trying to spark some creativity but it just hasn't happen. At this point I think I just need someone that can come up with one for me. What are the options for someone who is challenged both creatively and financially?
  22. Google "flash Mobs" and you might see a need for that 52 rounds. Since I live between two of the cities that have been having a problem with them I personally would think about a couple more mags stuffed in pockets. Can you fit more mag pouches on there? Can someone tell me about the pull through thing? Is it just a line 24 snap? How do you keep the snaps from marking up the pistol when you draw?
  23. I have a couple questions for you. I saw you made one of these for a Glock 19 on your facebook page. Since I would like to make one for an M&P my questions are...how does the holster work with the thicker Glock? Is it as comfortable? Does it sit on the belt the same as a 1911? I was thinking I would have to extend the wings out a little to allow them to flex back to the belt easier...what are your thoughts on that?
