Dirk, very cool. What does a setup like that cost? -
Gonna Get Rid of The Cobbler Machines (5 in all)
Prince replied to Prince's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Yeah, lots, thanks, just been busy mainly and haven't been on forums much/any. Guess I could post an update here before long though. -
Yep, getting rid of em. Some of you may remember the 'What the heck do this do?' threads I posted some time back after I bought a batch of cobbler and shoe repair machines. (thanks again to involved parties who helped me figure them out a bit) Well I decided to make way for my metal shop (for swords and other weapons) Tossed the machines up on eBay if anyone is interested. Auction starts at $1.00 and is absolute. If the final bid is $5, then it goes for $5. Not listed anywhere else but ebay and here, somebody might get a really good deal. Hope it's okay to make this thread here. Sorry if it's not. Figured this would be considered an auction notice instead of a classified marketplace add. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=270398381606 * Landis Aristocrat (Landis 12 L) * Sutton Line Finisher. * Sutton McKay Stitcher * Shoe Nailer 1 - Autosoler * Shoe Nailer 2 * Lots of MISC tools and materials

Sure, I'd love to see some pics. Thanks. I also agree that manual would be too much trouble to me. -
Making Clicker Dies - And Need Clicker Suggestions
Prince replied to Prince's topic in How Do I Do That?
I know what you mean. And you're basically correct; right now for me it would be close to pointless to have one, especially since at the moment 98% of my output is for unique custom one time items. But it's my personality to want to fast forward and run before I crawl and I'm strongly thinking about upping my production (for standard items) and doing more festivals and such. Outsourcing wouldn't be feasible for me given my current location, most likely anyway. I'm not going to get it immediately but hopefully before October if my current plans work out. And if I could get a good one for around $2K that would be really nice and it wouldn't take all that long to pay for itself even if I just sell stuff on stupid eBay. As for what's to be cut I would say mostly 10oz things like for bracers and maybe some bigger pieces for shoulder armor and such. I figured for larger things the swing head would allow for multiple presses for larger dies if the need arises. -
Hey folks, been a while. I'm really thinking about getting a clicker for some of my base products and I'm wondering about the feasibility of making my own dies. I have a fairly nice metal shop started with the intention of making knives. I have an educated guess as to how they're made, I figure the jest of it is to heat and bend steel banding to a pattern, and to weld supports in, but beyond that, with things like sharpening the raw steel, if they are heat treated, or how complex shapes are made or how corners should be welded I have no clue. Does anyone here know anything about making them? Beyond that though, as always I like to put the cart before the horse, I don't even have a clicker yet. I need some recommendations for some clickers. I have been looking around and I do like the Artisan 20 ton model. http://www.artisansew.com/manualsfiles/200-2%20B%20sheet.pdf I have delt with Artisan before when I got the Toro 3000 so like their service and products. From what I can tell this one is about $4500, I like its clean design and swing head. I'm not set on this one and if I could I'd like to find something used, either one of those or something comparable. Any one have suggestions of what others would be good? Thanks

psh... no big cushions with built in hole, no wheels, no recliner option, no hinge option, no fridge, no drink holder. I could do better than that in my sleep. I am the supreme master of lazy when it comes time to relax : )
-
Wow.. That's a LOT! Not meaning to sound offensive either, they look nice after all. I don't even wanna buy a stamp tool unless it's under $5 bucks most of the time. You guys are taking it in stride so I assume this is just everyday stuff? news to me anyway
-
It almost boggles my mind how shears/scissors aren't in the lead with like 70% of the votes but then again, my stuff is probably a lot different than the typical leather productions. Here are 2 pics of a current project in progress and you can see that there can be thousands of tight curves and complex cuts in a particular project. and each new suit requires dozens of brand new patterns. First I draw a bunch of stuff out onto the leather, and then use one of those pocket folder style razor blades to cut out 'clumps' of the drawn out parts since it's easier to control and cut smaller pieces, and then I cut and trim everything finally with the shears. I've never even used a head knife but can't imagine it'd be useful for anything other than what my handy razor knife thing does. Same for the roller knife, can't see it being useful for my stuff. Anyone have any contrasting thoughts? Maybe something else would actually be better for my kind of work?
-
.40 cents for roller buckle and .90 for the center bar roller buckle Looks like I've spent a lot more money than I needed to for quite a while.
-
Wow, crazy. Is that compared to the tandy business prices though? if it is I'll be really surprised
-
Cool, thanks. Sounds about right all things considered. Doubt I could find them used, it's pretty hard to turn them up in a google search even it seems. Are these all new? I've actually never heard of Weaver till a day or two ago. Looks like they've got all sorts of stuff. Wonder how prices of tools, hardware, and leather compare to Tandy.
-
Anyone know the price of these Weaver machines? http://www.leathersupply.com/demo_videos.php Mainly the edger, strap cutter, and rotary punch. When making armor the most tedious part is making all the buckle straps and retainer straps. This would make my life so much easier.
-
Yeah, I hope that's cool I really wish they'd do a good series for the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Also wish the ghost writer would hurry up with the last book : |
-
Would someone please post a pic of the original thing that is causing the problem? I'll be getting one of these machines and I'd like to see if it would interfere with stuff I'll be working on.

I was just thinking how handy it would be to have a business price list in front of me on the computer from time to time, especially when I could copy/paste the item numbers into an email and send it of and then confirm by phone that the order was placed. Or to easily compile a list of my frequent purchase items for quick order. I keep the paper list in my shop too. And it doesn't have a 'find' automatic function on it either lol An HTML version would be nice but maybe tandy wouldn't want to disclose that info publicly. Anyone know if there is something like what I'm looking for?

black v. USMC black
Prince replied to tashabear's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
hehe, I've had some fiebings purple turn out blacker than any other black on the market, more than once too!! -
I'm jealous of anyone with ready access to any leather shop these days. I almost even miss living in Houston lol.

Anyone know where I could get my logo nicely made on a leather stamp tool in a variety of sizes? I've got high res and line art versions of my logo so I'm hoping I can just send the business that and they can plug it into a computer. Anyone know what the costs might be as well as wait time?

Nice roll I think I'll add; studios and corporations own the movies and music ; )

Here's the Sutton thing pics Now that I look at the pics (what a sloppy oily mess) I see that it doesn't look too fun to thread... I'm sure theres a trick to it though.

So I've had this stuff for a few months now, bought it on ebay hoping I could find some uses for it but before I knew it I was buried under deadlines and other junk that popped up so long story short, now I've got commissions back under control and I've had a bit of a chance to organize my shop a bit, clean up the machines a bit and start figuring out what they are and what they do. Hopefully some of you guys can help me figure out what some of this stuff is and what it does and how it works! Alright so now with part two. The Landis thing fascinates me; It's quite large and weighs a ton. You turn it on and the motor starts turning then you press the petal which engages a sort of clutch and then the big 'engine' inside starts turning and metal shite starts moving every which way inside and out. It looks like it's meant to stitch the edges of something (there is no throat to speak of) My guess is the outer rim of shoes and even though I have not plans to make shoes (maybe a couple pairs of boots some day) I figured it would be a sheath maker's dream; just stick the 2 or 3 pieces of the sheath in there and let it do it's work. Also for bags and belts and stuff too. It looks like it sews with 2 curved needles and one seems to be broken on mine and then there's a bobbin too which means 3 feeds of threads. I'm a novice at this stuff so it makes my brain to explode thinking about it. How does that even work? And can I adapt it for the uses I have in mind? Maybe others? In spite of it's appearance of complexity it seems like it's over engineered to be solid and unbreakable even though it sounds like it's gonna break with every clankity-cla-chunk when it's going 90mph. And by they way, that's it's only speed unless you wanna idle/slip the clutch thing a bit (probably bad for it) and it's momentum keeps it going for quite a few clankities after you release the clutch. I suspect it was made before electronics dominated the world. Kind of reminds me of a steam locomotive. I'm sure I'll have to request tips for how to thread the thing when I get around to doing that cause I haven't been able to find a manual for it online or off. O yeah, and heat... what the heck is that for?? It has a heat control; does the motor get really hot or something? Even so, what exactly would it do to regulate the heat? Or maybe if your in cold areas and the oil needs to be warm enough to flow? I really have no clue. Next is the Sutton thing. It looks to me like a stitcher of some sort... certainly an atypical one, but one none the less since it's got thread and all so what else would it do? Since it's for shoes the only thing I can think of is that you could stick your shoe over the post and stitch away in awkward freedom. Again, not caring about shoes I imagined being able to sew odd shaped things like leather helmets, elbow and knee armor sections, weird shaped bags, and overlays on already shaped leather armor. Maybe other stuff if I can think of it. Think this is possible? Any other ideas? Tips and clarification would be greatly appreciated!! As a more general question; is it impossible to invent a dual feed thread input that would replace/remove the bobbin? I assume it must be or they'd have made it happen by now.

Hmmm Interesting... Thank you. So you've got one of these bad boy's too? What do you suppose they're worth? (once I repair the motors) Since you so kindly responded I feel it is my duty to latch onto your brain and leech more info from you. So do you think the gears of death could be adapted to anything other than a meat grinder and finger cleaver? I'd love to figure out something so I could just bring out a pair of bracers and quickly finish the edges on that thing. And the Naumkaeg thing; the old rotten fabric that is on mine, was it a sanding surface at some time? or do you get a pad that slips over that? Do you have any other clever adaptations you use in normal leatherworking with this thing? Cause I don't plan to ever do shoes. maybe a few pair of fantasy themed armored boots someday but can't imagine ever accepting a commission for shoes unless they pay me entirely too much. Thanks again man

Haven't been to those but I do miss Razoos and Saltgrass Steakhouse for sure. Couple other places here and there that were really good. Anyways, Hopefully someone can chime in with a viable alternative than a trip every time I need some leather ; )

So here's the first part I'm asking about: It's part of a Line finisher thing by sutton or is it sulton? Something like that. The belt sander stuff and buffing stuff is pretty straight forward, it's got a huge vacuum thing and its motor seems locked, makes a buzzing noise but doesn't move. It was such a nasty mess I imagine there's leather crud jamming it. But what I'm after is the weird gears of death thing. I'm adding some pics for specification but they're like super sharp gear things, a springy attachment that will lock into the gear blades but doesn't seem to engage or disengage the gear just springs against it... Below it is another toothy thing that's not as gnarly but it's all high RPM stuff, seems like it is anyway. Then to the right on the other side of the gears of death and over a little divider section there's a rotating spindle that held a ceramic disk or some sort of grinding wheel or cutoff disk. And concerning that disk thing... The line finisher machine has a breaker box built into the side of the machine if that tells you anything, and I had to rewire some stuff and come time to plug it in my assistant was standing near to watch the potential ensuing mayhem and explosions I assume. I told him he might want to step back, and then I plugged it in. There was a crazy winding up and whirring sound and then the disk exploded sending shards flying all over the place. It was pretty entertaining anyway... Kind of a scary machine. I've tried testing a few edges of leather in the gears of death, at the fear of loosing a limb or two I'll add. It seems to kind of finish the edges sometimes but I suspect that's just due to the high RPM instead of it's intended function. The other thing below that just seems to shred and fluff the edges more than anything. Oh yeah, one more thing, there's another motor with some sort of buffing attachment that looks like it would be really handy if I knew what kind of pads to get and where to get them. Any tips there? Then the pic of the blue tub has what looks like a bunch of extra gears of death. I'm sure they have fancy names but they're scary so I like my name. Kind of like ninja stars...
