  1. Hey thanks everyone! This was a lot of fun! I have a lot of respect for people that do videos like that regularly. It takes a lot of work to capture and edit. Sound was a total wash for me so i just put in a song. Glad you enjoyed it. I hope to make another but possibly have some sound too.
  2. This is a link to a new video I made for a new belt. http://youtu.be/cPN1gkAXQFE www.portlandcustomleather.com
  3. Thank you very much for all of your replies. I kept coming alibaba.com while looking for custom hardware. I guess more research is in order. I really appreciate the warning as it is rough enough starting a business without being robbed.
  4. Is anyone familiar with alibaba.com? they seem to want to do business in a manner that is quite suspect to me. I cant tell if they are just a listing service for overseas manufacturers or what the deal is. I cannot get the manufacturer info from them without creating an account and am quite surprised by some of the things they seem to be able to supply and how small of minimums. I want to believe but worry about sending billing information overseas if I don't have too.
  5. would you consider selling the modified feed plate? I already own a con sew and would be interested in that. I too have upgraded to a servo, and speed reducer and flip down roller guide but I sew a lot of thinner stuff and the feed plate sounds interesting. otherwise could you tell me more about how it was made? Thanks! good luck!
  6. Still available? Need details.
  7. Machine is still available. Feel free to call anytime 715-271-9558
  8. depending on the level of layout and design you create making that pattern or creating a workflow to manufacture can be time consuming. There are also many aspects of design that don't carry through to a maker. What you can draw on paper might require toolsets that bring an even higher dollar. do you plan to build any bags yourself or just want to design? I would urge you to also build. Your design eye will develop much faster. You don't have to invest in industrial machines for fine leathers, you can work with cheap knits and build your designs and have a good idea what you would want to keep in your designs. Just a few thoughts. Good luck on your journey! make it happen!
  9. I'll try that Ferg. Right now I'm liking how the blade cups, Ive been working from the inside of my skive towards the edge too, then leaving the fine feathering for last. I used to work for the outside edge in and I think that is part of the reason I was gouging my edges. thanks!
  10. and beyond that I read a thread the other day about caseing your leather, i'm not sure if it is suggested before skiving but I tried it and I liked the results. It does tend to stretch more at the thin points but i'm okay with that on this project because the design allows for trimming after its sewn.
  11. Today I was skiving some leather and regrettably ruining more than successfully making I became frustrated and tried to mod my hand skiver... This is the skiver I'm working with... I removed the bottom plate like you would to change out a blade. I realized that the plane that the blade bends on is to slight for my liking and causes me to cut through my edge often times when a thin skive is required. So to improve the curve/plane that the blade bends on I wedged a piece of card stock in-between the blade and the handle. I also put a wedge of card stock on each side of the screws to compensate for wedge in the center of the blade. This helped to create a more drastic curve which I find much easier to control and I don't seem to cut so uncontrolled. Another idea I have for hand skiving would be to get a thin sheet of metal clamp it to my table so that I can have a surface to but the leather up against but have a raised plane from the table, hopefully acting like a guide for skiving. Thought this might be helpful for anyone struggling with skiving... Anthony Loughan http://lousleather.weebly.com http://facebook.com/lousfineleather
  12. thanks for the pics and helpful insight! I am attempting a new wallet and really appreciate it!
  13. I just published a website that includes my contact info and a nice gallery of my work. Please take a moment to look it over and if you are on Facebook give a like and I'll do the same. http://facebook.com/lousfineleather http://lousleather.weebly.com Thanks everyone!
  14. I really enjoyed your tutorial and design! had to give your method of rolled edges a try. looks so clean! made my lady this little side purse. Thanks for the inspiration!
  15. I hear ya! but when you do get pattern making and stitching down it is quite rewarding. I much prefer to make everything my own. inspired by others but still my own. Thanks man! I'll check those out.
  16. I have a Consew 206rb-5 in tremendous condition and has been well maintained. I upgraded the clutch motor to a servo motor and love its performance. I would not be selling the machine if I hadn't found an artisan I like at such a great price. This machine has served me very well. Includes, table, servo motor, and all accessories. I also have an extra mechanical clutch motor I would consider sending with it. I am located in Portland OR feel free to call! 715-271-9558 item is to large to ship so I would prefer pickup only or I could deliver within 50-100 miles. This machine has provided all my needs up to currently. I am only upgrading. Still very happy with the machine! Asking price is $1000 Tony
  17. I have a tipmann boss sewing machine and don't put it to use enough. Machine is in excellent condition with very little use. I have all the documentation and most of the attachments, including flat bed, stitch guide and a lot of other accessories I have never used. They sell brand new on sale from Tipmann for $1195 with just the base unit. I am asking $1000 including all the accessories. The only reason I am selling this machine is because I found a Skiver and would put it to much more use than the Tipmann Boss. I am willing to ship anywhere that doesn't create a hassle. Thanks for looking! feel free to call 715-271-9558 I am in Portland, Oregon
  18. I often struggle with "artwork". most of my experience comes from duplication art as a screen printer. but i started to hate making the same thing over and over. This project was limited to time and cost efficiency. it was a commissioned gift for a 3rd wedding anniversary for some dear friends. I didnt' put as much time into the carving and tooling as i would have liked. like i said it was for some dear friends so there came a limit to how much time I could put into the piece for what i was going to be paid. as is I put in way more time than i was paid for. hahaha. thank you for the direction but as you said it was what the customer wanted. I spent the better part of the day tooling that design and couldn't justify more design time for what i sold the wallet for Have you every used your airbrush equipment for staining leather? i've seen some neat results with antiqueing leather using air brushing. I want to get into air brushing for finishes but haven't had the time to research necessary tools yet. any suggestions for equipment for a beginner? my main goal would be for feathering in darker colors at the edges and such...
