This is my latest embossing plate for leather. I did this during the tour night at the Dallas Maker Space. Got some excited potential members and some good questions. embossing plate of the Boy Scout emblem. 2.8" tall in Brass. cheers!

thank you. I only set a maximum depth for the model. I don't usually have to worry about it bottoming out regardless of the thickness. That's probably why the tool marks aren't there. I haven't thrown this in the tumbler yet which should smooth it out quite well. cheers!

I'm no fan of the evil empire, but their new superior line seems to be an attempt to offer some good leather. However, the price is outrageous so still not a fan.

This is my latest embossing plate for leather. Mods - move it if you think it is too racey. I decided to do both the positive and the negative although only the negative is needed for an embossing. trying to squeeze it between the plates tears thru the leather so I'll just use the positive as a showpiece. 3" tall in brass. cheers!

EMBOSSING&DEBOSSING ON UPHOLSTERY LEATHER
Studio-N replied to machinehead's topic in How Do I Do That?
very nice. the takeaway here is he is applying heat and pressure to emboss what must be a chromium tanned leather. He basically built a hot stamp embossing machine. Adding the silicone behind the piece was a good idea as opposed to glue and leather dust. Cheers! -
Where do these "stamps" come from?
Studio-N replied to SouthernCross's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
those are certainly stamped. I've done many similar ones for customers. He is obviously VERY good with an airbrush/paintbrush. -
this is a companion piece to the firefighter I put up last month with the resulting embossing. 3" piece of brass for a wallet back plate. I've done and shown this one before made from Delril but these brass ones should pretty much outlive me.

thank you! and just in time for the new movie.

I am delving into making the plates and embossing rolls in brass. I haven't had much success in the lettering for maker stamps. still need more practice (who has time for that?!) but in all likely hood I wouldn't be able be able to match the price of the hong kong phooey stamps, so I may not do them.

i have crushed the letter stamps from the evil empire on an arbor press. they used to carry a plug set which fit into the hole and gave a flat spot on top for just such an operation They have long discontinued it though. You can always use the ram foot to provide that surface.

there is 2 hours of work in this plus a good $15 in the brass alone so in the $100 range. kind of tough to compete with the hong kong phooeys. both the alien face hugger are available in delrin for $75 here is the companion piece the alien facehugger.

this is a 1/2 of a wallet back plate I've done before in plastic and the resulting embossing in leather. this was cut into brass. I'm extremely happy with it and it will likely last forever. Kind of timely too with the new movie coming out soon. I'll likely have a facehugger companion piece done this weekend. cheers!

This is a brass embossing plate I cut out on my CNC. I'm feeling quite comfortable cutting brass now. maker stamps are still eluding me though. the lettering is just not right at the small size needed. I'll keep working on the lettering. In the meantime I'll keep doing that on delrin with the laser. I'm gonna try my hand at casting these in an aluminum infused resin. it won't stick to the brass so they will make good master plates. www.maker-stamps.com

the stamp mode is usally for making rubber stamps - meaning it creates a ramp/angle to each letter. that's fine for a rubber stamp where it never goes below the surface but in the case of leather you want to penetrate the surface and the ramp will expand the letter, which may end up looking blurry. Keep the letters crisp.

this was done on a HAAS VF2 vertical mill. I learned a lot on it. I broke my 1/16" bit. after some adjustment to feed/speed/step over I finished out with a 1/32" and no breakage. I have access to a HAAS at our local makerspace. unfortunately they don't have a 4th axis attachment so I'll be doing that stuff for the embossing rolls on my home router mill. cheers!

I think you've pretty much answered your question. - go BACK to the oil dye. Eco-foo-foo is crap.

this is my latest prototype project. A wallet back embossing plate in aluminum with a favorite theme. This can be used directly on leather but what I plan to do is to use it as my master for casting these in an aluminum infused resin. I'm not worried about the tool marks on the bottom since the leather will never bottom out. I learned a lot on this one (meaning I broke a bit). the next one will hopefully be done in brass.

the video is now gone. I hope it IS different than the boss. The evil empire tried to come out with a clone (the Stitch Bastard). they even had it in their catalog before being sued by Tippmann for patent infringement and won.
