    For those who already have a 3D printer (or a CNC and a fair bit of technical acumen) there's a 2W laser on Indiegogo for ~$220 now which will cut leather or wood up to 3/16" thick.

    Good point about the smell --- my first job out of college involved working w/ a company which had a location which did laser-cut/engraved rubber and it was noted as an unpleasant place to visit --- guess that decides for the drag knife.

    I've been considering getting a Donek drag knife for my Shapeoko --- I find cutting leather tedious and trying, but would be patient enough to carefully pull pieces apart and finish any corners which it didn't finish cutting. Probably though, a laser would be a better option, for the reasons stated by others already in this thread. I've been considering drawing up a set of items and filling up one of the leather sizes available at Ponoko and then ordering that --- it's kind of pricey though.

    For granite, go to a kitchen counter manufacturer and get a piece cut out of a counter for a sink.

    It's lovely. Have you ever considered doing some sort of replaceable insert or overlay which will allow it to be used w/o fear of the design getting scuffed by the string?

    Useful/unctional items are not subject to copyright protection. Specific stylistic aspects can be protected w/ a design patent, but must be marked w/ the patent #..

    One possibility to simplify this would be to make the pattern out of posterboard as suggested, then draw it up, including stitching holes in a vector drawing program using the template from Ponoko.com and have them laser cut it. Then you'd ``merely'' have to form and stitch it.

    Interesting. A do-it-yourself way to do that would be: - get a tool w/ a wooden handle - cut off the tool part - mount it, then shape the wood w/ files and sand paper
