For those who already have a 3D printer (or a CNC and a fair bit of technical acumen) there's a 2W laser on Indiegogo for ~$220 now which will cut leather or wood up to 3/16" thick.

I came across a design for a leather splitter which I'm planning on making when I need to thickness some rawhide: http://elasticrods.wordpress.com/2012/01/08/home-made-leather-splitter/

Good point about the smell --- my first job out of college involved working w/ a company which had a location which did laser-cut/engraved rubber and it was noted as an unpleasant place to visit --- guess that decides for the drag knife.

I've been considering getting a Donek drag knife for my Shapeoko --- I find cutting leather tedious and trying, but would be patient enough to carefully pull pieces apart and finish any corners which it didn't finish cutting. Probably though, a laser would be a better option, for the reasons stated by others already in this thread. I've been considering drawing up a set of items and filling up one of the leather sizes available at Ponoko and then ordering that --- it's kind of pricey though.

Where Would I Look For Poundo And Granite Pieces?
WillAdams replied to mtroyalguy's topic in Suppliers
For granite, go to a kitchen counter manufacturer and get a piece cut out of a counter for a sink. -

Celtic Archery Arm Guard For Myself
WillAdams replied to Solofalcon's topic in Archery Quivers and Bow Cases
It's lovely. Have you ever considered doing some sort of replaceable insert or overlay which will allow it to be used w/o fear of the design getting scuffed by the string? -
Lovely! The sheepskin lining will be a perfect finihing touch. Is it ambidextrous?

This Etsy listing uses a nice technique: http://www.etsy.com/listing/126277146/fish-scalesstamped-leather-snapping

Are Patterns And Templates Protected Under Copyright Laws?
WillAdams replied to Ian1783's topic in Patterns and Templates
Useful/unctional items are not subject to copyright protection. Specific stylistic aspects can be protected w/ a design patent, but must be marked w/ the patent #.. -
FYI The new license for Sketchup Make precludes commercial use. A number of free CAD programs listed here: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/CAD esp. Sketchflat http://cq.cx/sketchflat.pl

Interesting. A do-it-yourself way to do that would be: - get a tool w/ a wooden handle - cut off the tool part - mount it, then shape the wood w/ files and sand paper

Very cool! I'm currently working through an assortment of leather acessories for my archery and trying to resolve the different shades and colours --- wondering if I shouldn't just break down and make one set from a full hide and dye it all at once.

I use rust dissolved in vinegar for woodworking and I've found you can jump-start the solution by starting off w/ rusty objects --- the rusty old Brillo pad from the kitchen sink, flakes of body work from an old clunker... (or get a bit of iron oxide from the paint counter at your local hardware store). Very nice, very understated result on the case. Agree the de-glazing should have been part of the cleaning.

AIUI, Fred Bear was awarded a patent for an archer's glove ( http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect2=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&d=PALL&RefSrch=yes&Query=PN/D107294 ), and before that finger protection was finger stalls (little wraps around finger tips), tabs (thanks BoydMiles for that link!), complete gloves or thumb rings or specialized gloves for Mongolian Draw.
