I just bought some new bobbin cases for my Nakajima 280L on ebay. Great price, great shipping. BAD DEAL!!! I can't get the tension set. I am running a #23 needle with #69 thread in the bobbin and #138 top. Am I doing something wrong or did I just get dealt a raw deal??? I ran it this way before I got the new cases but my old one was in rough shape so that's why I bought these!!

I am a full time carpenter so I get to find lots of great deals and ideas. Our Granite supplier told me that they probably send two or three ton of waste granite out every three months or so. Jeff told me that I could get all I wanted and he even delivered me three 24 x 18 x 1 1/2 inch pieces the last time they were out. I have since found a piece the same width and length but 4 1/2 inches thick and find it a lot better to stamp on. I have started to use the 1 1/2" to skive on and let Candace wail away on some stamps on it when she's bored.

Send it to Herb French in Sheridan Wyoming!! The man specializes in sharpening leather tools and does so at a reasonable price. Herb used to do all the metal work for Bob Douglas and still does some for him now. PM me and I'll give you his phone number

Mike, I have used buffalo rawhide(bison). The one thing that I found is that you pretty much have to divide the hides behind the shoulder area. The front end of them is quite a bit thicker in my experience than the butt half. The front ends are darn sure tough to cut too!! Other than that they are great to work with. Up here there seems to be an abundance of buffalo so I get my hides at the right price(FREE!!!!)

Mike, I have a couple spares. They are not Snell & Athertons from what I can see but they are sharp and have plenty of blade left. PM me for a price. I think there is a 5 and a 3 or 4 (they arent marked with numbers) Bob Douglas might have a few kicking around too.

The ratchet bar on my draw down is the bar from a ratchet type fence stretcher. If you cut them in half you have enough for two draw downs. Didn't cost me a penny

How can I temporarily mark leather?
Elton Joorisity replied to Kevin King's topic in Patterns and Templates
Hey Kevin. One thing I have done in the past on my bucking rolls with boot top style stitching is to draw the design on tracing paper and stick it to the leather with double sided tape. I then stitch right through the paper and tear it off after. I have rarely had any stay under the stitches. It is easy to remove any if it does stay under them though. -
Pete, what you could do is find an old osborne creaser (probably the biggest size you can ) and sharpen the short leg(the one use to crease). I have been buying them for a while and turning them into push beaders so I can't see why you couldn't make a border cutter

Thanx!! I've been building chaps for 12 years and here's the first saddle I ever built. -
Here's a couple samples of my work. The chaps were finished on Wednesday and the briefcase last december.

Contact Luke, Vandy, or Emily (Vandy's the real boss. hehehe) at Sheridan Leather Outfitters. The prices are great and the service is better!! Talked to Vandy twice today and she always has a good story or two.

WHICH FACTORY MADE TREE IS BEST?
Elton Joorisity replied to cowboygear's topic in Saddle Supplies, Tools & Trees
I know for a fact that Sheridan Leather Outfitters has(had) a Rod Nikkel tree in stock because I sent it there. Things are pretty busy around here and I had a tree that I had planned to build a spec saddle on. I needed to order some leather from S.L.O. and we got on the tree topic. Mentioned to Luke that I had one kicking around to trade and he said SOLD!!! It's a wood post Will James 16" can't remember all the specs but if it's still there Luke will let you know. Anyone out there needing a good supplier for just about anything to do with the trade should be sure to call Luke and Vandy!!! These are quite possibly the nicest people to talk to and deal with!!
