Latest Works
tkirwan replied to bissetdesign's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
what is the background tool you used on IMG_1695.JPG. love the work you do..someday i may get there. -
I am getting ready to make a survival knife sheath with a pouch that holds a firestick and whetstone. I have attached the schematic drawing of my design. If I could get the community of experts to give me suggestions on my design I would greatly appreciate it. I will be welt forming the pockets for the firestick and whetstone, along with the front of the fold over flap for the handle. The utility pouch will be held onto the main body of the sheath by wrap around straps. The entire package will be attached to a belt by a D-ring strap. A button compass will be attached to the welt and show through the sheath front. Unfortunately the pouch will need to be removed to see the compass. Thanks for the help. sheath1.pdf

thanks for the comments MikTigger and CountryStyle. I am glad you like it. yes I felt there was nothing wrong with my stitching other than the holes sometimes went astray. I showed it to a master leather maker here in Denver and he was more than suprised at the level I am at after only two projects. Thnaks again for appreciating my work.

thanks....i already sorted out the stitching..

Sir Derrin, thanks for viewing my project and thanks for the comments, and for not beating me up... i did use a spacing wheel, i am just not very steady when it comes to punching the holes....yes there is a welt on both the parang and the file.. thanks for the comments...one thing that screwed up the sewing was i tooled the front piece without gluing it down so i had loads of stretch so during sewing i had to use my dremmel to redo the holes, which caused lots of missalignment.

the latest addition to my field pack. the parang came with a funky scabbard so i replaced it, i like mine better. i really like the file sheath on the back for the file.next i want to make a wooden handle and wrap it in leather. comments are welcome as long as you don't rip me to bad, after all this is only my second project.

this is a folding knife sheath i made from scraps from three other projects. was bored and wanted to try molding as i am planning on making a molded canteen. i think it turned out pretty good for a first molding try.

My first attempt at a three legged camp stool. Even though the center piece is not centered i am really happy with only my second ever project carving and tooling. since this is for me to use when conducting archaeology in the field i don't mind imperfections in execution of carving and tooling,

very nice wallets. i really like the black one best..always like a good basketweave, -
Hey all; So this is my first ever project that i did tooling and carving on. The sheath shape i created by laying my K-Bar knife on the leather, tracing it, then expanded the sketch to provide stitching and tooling. The tooling was applied by me just trying out the various tools I have so its not supposed to be really anything professional looking. The skull idea i borrowed from another person on here cuz i really liked it. I carved the skull freehand then tooled it. i wanted the skull to be the color of the leather after i oiled it, but i found out later the resist i used is water based and the dye is oil based, thus the dye went right through the resist. but it still came out looking killer. So please comment, good or bad, it is my first real project other than a sporran, a side pouch, and a possibles bag, all of which have no decoration just sewn leather.

More Western Holsters
tkirwan replied to Frank's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
beautiful work frank..hopefully someday i will be this good. -
just finished my new sporran and side pouch. they are made from a buffalo hide i bought at my local native-american craft shop. i know the edges are rough, thinking about lacing them next week. but other than that i am very pleased for my very first leather project. the buttons are authentic IRA buttons from the 1916 war against england, that Ireland won for the most part. like everyone else here comments, both positive and negative are welcome

Hiyas All; Been lurking for a bit now trying to garner good ideas for my leather work. Man have i gotten loads of great ideas. Just finished a side pouch and a sporran for my kilt.Made them out of some excellent buffalo hide. Just started on a knife sheath for my K-Bar Knife and a scabbard for my machette. I am an archaeologist so experimenting with stuff is in my blood and I am hoping to get good enough at leather work to supliment my income during the winter months when I am not in the field doing archaeology. I want to say thanks to everyone for letting me watch conversations and view their work, and a special thank you to those whos ideas I have copied, you will know who you are when I start uploading some of my work for critique. Cheers Tadhg

i make mountainman black powder gear, mostly bags, moccasins, knife and rifle sheaths. i am looking for an inexpensive sewing machine to make my projects go a wee bit faster. any suggestions or offerings of free would help this poor unemployed boy out.
