DoubleBarP replied to electrathon's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Today I gave out another Test and Evaluation holster / with mag carrier to a SWAT guy. He had Firearms training today so it will get tested right away. Will get feed back in a month or so. Another guy, saw the holster and asked for one for his S&W Performance Center gun. Put the pattern together, cut it out, glued, sewed and molded same. Its drying now. Leather fix... -

She who must be obeyed, has asked me about a purse that could conceal a handgun. Having never made a purse I confess I dont know sickum. I read through Mr Johnsons purse book and it is very informative (thank you). It does not broach the CCW aspect of design. Of course She who must be obeyed has some requirement about size, shape ect... I asked her if I could tear apart her favorite one to which she promply replied a resounding NO. Looking for any tips, pointers, suggestions, anything out there I should know before I start this journey. Regards =P

"can I Have Your Design?"
DoubleBarP replied to MdB Leatherworks's topic in Marketing and Advertising
This is a great discussion and as someone who just started in earnest trying to get it right. My story is: I have always had an interest in Leather craft. In the 60's I worked for my grand dad getting 2 bits for shining shoes in his shoe repair shop. He also did saddle and harness repair. About 25 years ago I went to a buddy's place and walked into his home leather shop and that smell of leather brought back those childhood memories of working with leather. Yes there is a point. I just retired after 36 years of totin a gun. One of the things that has always been a pet peeve is commercial holsters with the "will fit" list. As I said a friend makes custom leather and taught himself the craft. He makes some first class stuff and usually runs 10-14 months behind. When I retired a couple of months ago I decided that I had time on my hands with nothing scheduled so I went to the basement with several firearms and some of the holsters that I like and set out to figure out how they were built. I managed to rough out a couple of pattern starting with a line across a page of card stock paper.Tracking the gun figuring out the angle, stitch line and holster shape. Yes I watched the videos, and got the AH book (discovered I had most of the info in the FO Baird book I already had). The problem was that the patterns in that publicationare not contemporary designs nor are they necessarily safe designs (exposedtriggers). After cutting, gluing, and sewing several only to discover "it don'tfit" on on more holsters than I can count. I keep going back and tweakingthe pattern to try to get it right. I have a couple of shopping bags of thoseefforts. I also took some of them to my friend to get his suggestions. I askedhim recently "how do you get your designs Aesthetically pleasing? He replied justkeep trying over and over until you get it right and it works for you. The point of all this is that I don't have any design skill. I have looked atwhat others have done and tried to come up with something that will work forme. If there was a design packet out there I would probably buy it just like Ibought the other books to see what makes it tick and how it was put together. Building a holster for me is something very personal as Iknow that the design, quality, workmanship, and craftsmanship of what I builtmay well be something that another person carries a life saving tool in. Thatmotivates me to continue until I get it right. I'll take help from where ever I can get it from. It'slike shining shoes for my grand dad, nothing went out of the shop that he didnot approve of or would have worn himself. I will not go back tolurking are reading. =P:whatdoyouthink: -
Leather Consistency And Dye
DoubleBarP replied to DoubleBarP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Asked my wife what she thought of the holster and the way it colored. She "likes" it and was wondering how I did it. She seems to think some of her social circle who like to shoot will like the holster / belt combo. She also liked the "gold" thread (white nylon that was died with holster). Any way I did a two more holsters and applied the dye with an air brush this time. Used half as much dye and seems to me a more even coat but then again its black this time. Thanks for the pointers... =P -
Did you ever get a response to your question? My wife just asked me about this very topic.... =P

Leather Consistency And Dye
DoubleBarP replied to DoubleBarP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Cant say for sure if it Pro or not. I do have a foam brush and I think I have an air brush outfit in the shed. Small compressor as well. Going to give that a try on the next one (in black)... Thanks =P -

Two coats of Fibings with a dober.... -
Well I've been lurking a long time and reading mostly.Have been trying to come up with a pattern I'm satisfied with that provides speed, security, durability and concealability... The attached is the result. Still not satisfied with the holster. Tried dark brown dye. Consistency of leather seems to bea problem with dyeing the leather. Guess that's why black is so popular.... Figure if I can get a glock to look ok that them I can tackle anything…. Your observations?

I'm no expert but I have a Glock 17 and 19 and both fit the holsters I have. In fact I just finished the first holster I would post a photo of. Still working on the holster pattern but getting close. Figure if I can get a Glock holster to look on I'm then ready to try something else... -
