  1. I just may happen to have an copy of the drawing of the cav holster you are talking about. I got if directly from the Arsonal it is the origional pattern with specifications.... While it is a pdf copy you can enlarge in on your computer tosee the actual swivel and the part numbers for same. Only down side is I have no idea how to attach a pdf file in the forum's new format. Send me a pm with an email address and I will send the drawing if you are interested...
  2. I got them from the Springfield Arsenal. they are the originaldrawings some are a little hard to read but still very usable... I also gotother military leather gear including saddles and other tac.... Send me a pmwith your email and I'll send a link to where I have them stored.... You willhave to sort through the drawings to find the one you want. Otherwise searchhere as Ghost solider or ghost rider (I forgetwhat is user name is converted several to very good PDF files that can beused...
  3. I was able to locate the origional drawing for the holster. I think in the spec's listed the hardware part number is listed. The caveat is the part number is from 1912. Did you try Ohio Bag?
  4. My motive for getting a machine was I retired and my wife urged me to GET a hobby... I have sort of arthritic hands so hand stitching a lot turns outto be quite painful after a while... I did a lot of reading here and Wiz-crafter along with others provided lots of insight… (I only wish I had a small portion of their knowledge and experience). I ultimately went with the CB3500. I had an opportunity to try a Saddle Makers 4500 and it was fine. Sewed a holster and belt first time I used it… . After our visit I went with the 3500 – not working on anything larger than that holsters or belts so far.... He built several saddles using a 9" throat machine... I have a friend who builds holsters and he used a Lubrisco, and CB. Both of them are < 15"… Toledo Bob provided a sharp pencil deal.. There was a learning curve with the machine at first and at times it still gives me fits… All in all my goal is to have a hobby that pays for it self. So far that has not happened but I'm on my way… The more holsters I build the better they seem to get (or my standards are slacking off)… I carried a firearm for over 3 decades and I would not send a holster out that I would not wear myself to protect myself or my family…
  5. Thanks for the information. Checked their website and it seems to be what I'm looking for. Gonna order - of I can figure out how... Sent them an emailll You were most helpful... DBP thanks. checked nothing on their web page... Thanks also for the review. Found it helpful and it nuged me towards the metal shank unit... Thank's once again DBP
  6. Can anyone point me towards where I can pick up a Weaver -9- Leather Slicker? I had the chance to see how they work the other day and it would sure speed up the process on edge burnising ..... I've checked the web and no luck. I'm not a "dealer" so I cannot buy direct from Weaver. My favorite supplier Springfield does not carry them....Looking for the wood model #65-2961 thanks! DBP
  7. From the perspective of having carried a handgun for over 3 decades. Any holster should provide a shooting grip in the holster before the firearm is drawn... While your case is nice it is not a holster. Better to make a pocket holster and carry it that way... Way more secure and easier to access the firearm... JMHO... DBP
  8. I just dropped 5 bills at Springfield Leather for HO and have no complaints... Give them a call, tell the what your looking for and they will do their best to provide. I have no complaints to date regarding them... DBP
  9. Welcome to the LWF. You'll find a lot of expert advise here and lots of help here. My expireance is the learning curve goes straight up from here... . I sent a PM as well. DBP
  10. Actually the Cav bags have tiedowns in the origional pattern...One could always use heavier wt leather to "stiffen" it up somewhat...
  11. Do not know if this is exactly what you are looking for. I obtained several drawing from Springfield Arsenal some of which were US Cav saddel bags... Ghostsoilder was kind enough to clean some of them up. They can be found here... http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=41199&st=30 If you dont find what the pattern there. Let me know by pm with your email address and I will send your a link to my storage. You'll have to search for the exact drawing your looking for as they are numbered and not named.. DBP
  12. I traced one and sent it to SinPac. send me your email address and I"ll email what I provided him.. Keeping in mind that I only traced the outline and made a sketch. All you need to do is print it on card stock cut it out and use to trace on leather... I did not cut up my sap to determine what was on the inside... DBP
  13. Kudos for hiring an apprentice.. I did an apprenticeship many years ago. 2 years, 4000 hours. An apprenticehas to eat too… Fuel, vehicle insurance all cost money just like your light bill and materials… My point is unless you find someone who is retired and looking for something to do, or someone who really wants to learn the craft you may be disappointed… Do you have any kind of structured training program in mind? What performance standards are in place so you can measure progress or lack there of… At least minimum wage plus incentives for quality work not necessarily quality is what I would be looking for.. As someone else said mistake swill cost you money, in terms of time and material.. This helper will also be performing work that bears your makers mark. They will be representing your shop. So finding the right person, that will meet your work ethic and product standards may be a difficult task… Usually the apprentice gets to do the crap jobs and clean up after the craftsman. It is not necessarily the best job and one really has to want to learn the craft to stick with it.. Just asking some questions that come to mind based upon my own experience. I only wish it had been in a leather shop… DBP
  14. As a novice just starting out building holsters I think the information you provided is very helpful, The photo illustratoins are excellent. I'm wondering if you would be able to put this into a pdf or word document so I could be printed out. I tried the cut and paste but the text becomes unreadable.... Dont want to impose further. Just dont have a computer on my bench to referr back... thanks DBP
  15. I too inherited some tools...And with my rescent score I dont think I'll need to pick anything up for quite a while. I was going through the stuff from my mom today sorting ect... Found a book "Ideas for Leather Projects vol 2 #1934 c1975. Has several purses bults, a couple hats and moccinas.. Now I have some ideas for the CCW purse my wife asked about... Have several Tandy kits to do some tinkerng with as well so I'll be busy all winter... DPB
  16. [quote name=rickybobby' timestamp='1343493636' was also involved in many of the doodle pages. His style is unique and you will recognize it after you get his book and see it someplace else. I like it as it is larger flowers and leaves then most other patterns in print. It is just a very cool look! Good luck with your new toys! As I was looking thru it this morning while counting craft tools (158 including two harley davidson made in tiwan). I see some that remind me of the "Sheridan" style circles and curves in there.... Rough math - tools at 3.00 each 462.00 in carving tools.. Now to just start useing them.... I like the excell idea. Would make it very organized / sorted... Thanks DBP
  17. He said he wanted them to go to someone who's use em.. I told him I would give them a good home....He told me his price was 300 firm and that he knew I was serious cause of the drive..... .. I am a happy camper and so was he.... Looking at some it stamps up closer today. They dont look like they have ever been struck.. Nothing for sale.. Once I get everthing sorted see what if any dups there may be... I just had to tell someone that would understand.... Thanks for the tip on Griffin, I'v never heard of him... It is in very good condition.... DBP
  18. Talk to an old boy on Wednesday who has a few tools and stuff he was wanting to sell (as he put it, while he could still lift the boxes). Tried to get out of him exactly what he had... He suggested I "come look" cause I would not be sorry.. Here is a llist of the books (a little water damage on a few but still readable). 5 racks of tools, Knife, wallet, belt, cig lighter, key rings, buckels kits ... 9 sets of number / letter / image stamps sets...A home brew stitching pony, box with various hardware, snap sets, exacto knives, dobbers, dye, lace and I'm still going through the other box... 19. you I would look a adobe acrobat. As I recall you can build a form in MS Word turn that in to a survey and have it emailed back to you. It wil then tally the results into an excell type spread sheet. I used if for surveys and the like as well as a test document for online training... Don't know if that is exactly what you want but thought I would mention it.. DBP
  20. Looks good. I would echo the BW weave leaving a very colorful distinctive bruse which may come back to haunt the operator in the event of use... I'm looking around for the other one I have (as I recall its pretty beat up). If I find it I'll deconstruct and photo / trace same and send photos.. DBP
  21. If you look at the photo and tracing you can see a small strap attached by rivits to one end. At the other larger end is the weighted material. I would have to "deconstruct" the sap to determint exactly how everything fits on the inside. That would be problematic.. I have another one somewhere. If I run across it I'll tear it apart and post photos... DBP
  22. I hope it works for you. I did take a photo and post it also.. Let me know if I can help out with more info... DBP
  23. PM me your email address and I will send a link so you can download the origional drawings of the holsters, saddles and other military gear. You may also check new content as Ghostsolider has converted several of them to images and cleaned up some of the drawings and has posted links to down load those from his meda file storage site. Either way they are avaialble for you.. DBP
  24. Ghost soldier: Just wanted to say THANK YOU For cleaning up some of thedrawings and converting the PDF files to images. I hope everyone here finds use in the efforts to do this.. As you said, it is about sharing. I think it is important so Leatherwork does not become a lost art. Being a craftsman (non-gender specific term which includes both male and female genders. Used simply for the sake of brevity) is in my view slipping away from us. Kudos to all who strive to not let that happen... DBP
