  1. that's awesome! i'm first generation (still a kid myself i've been told lol) , but i've got a pretty strong feeling my kid will learn at a young age too
  2. cool, i'm going to get everyones name in a list and start right away. first up are Froghunter and our leading lady, johanna! i'm honored to get us a new logo for the site, so this is going to be fun keep em coming if you'd like to get on the list, I'm totally down to have all the design work this summer
  3. oops, thats weird. yea, i do everything by hand heres the last wallet again, don't know why it's not showing up:
  4. absolutely guys, it seems theres going to be a bunch of people (which is awesome, the more the better and more practce) so what i'll do is write down a list and work my way down it. i could even post progress, sketches, etc. here and everyone could help make some decisions if whoever was getting designed at the time was ok with it!
  5. i guess i'll just date my topics now heres the past week or so's worth of jobs, i may have posted the blue snap wallet before but i'm not sure, it's a bit older but i finished it up this week so it's a new picture at least. um...black/natural mid is being featured on a fashion blog, and the first reg. is crazy thick, but the customer wanted a cardholder under the zipper pouch. it'll hold a ton, i can't imagine sitting on it though (1" unloaded!) hope yall like em! my hands hurt
  6. So, I love leatherwork and all and it's paying the bills, but I feel like my mom would be pissed watching me sew away my design degree. As I have about 2.5 semesters left, I'd like to start getting some independent jobs going and not just have student work in my portfolio. heres where yall come in i'd like to do some identity projects. This means logos, letterheads, buisness cards, banners, packaging if you need it, brands, etc... maybe even website redesigns this summer if i get my web skills up to par (working on my site now, i'm more of a print add and logo person so i don't know as much as I should). I'd like to do as many as I can, I figure I can take 2-3 a month maybe if theres a lot of people that would like to give it a go (hell, even if you don' use it i'd love to do it as a portfolio piece). If you just need a logo, or just a buisness card design, that's cool too, I just want to design more. The way it will work is I'll design everything like a professional, not just blindly give you a random identity but listen to what you want and send you sketches, let you pick what you'd like, etc. then when everything's done, i'll send you all the files and you can get them printed at a printer and use them! Now I know what you're thinking, what's the price? The answer: $0 I want to design more, so I'm not going to take any money from anyone. If you'd like to send a trinket or a nice little tooled scrap for me to use in one of my wallets, I would love that, however this is about practice and getting myself the confidence to go out and interview for jobs when I graduate. plus, i've met so many nice people and learned so much, its all I can do to give back. so who first?!

    the best leather

thanks guys, i'm going to look at all these brands and make some calls tomorrow, it'll be nice to try something new
  10. I need some help: as most of everyone here knows, I make wallets. most of my wallets are natural, and get oiled by the people who buy them. I'm having some trouble, however, finding good leather. Tandy's been ok, but they're hit and miss...the last time i went they pulled out 3 hides in a row that were moldy. I've tried a couple other places around me, but nothing has been exactly what i need: smooth grain, fine tanning qualities, and all out nice qualit leather what i'm looking for is an online supplier with the best leather I can get. I go through about a side every 3 weeks to a month, so i need something that i can trust. I'm looking for a 4-5 oz, smooth, amazing grained leather. now, i know there's no such thing as a flawless hide, but the best part of working with wallets is I don't need huge pieces at a time: i can cut around imperfections. so, any suggestions?
  11. brings me back to my bmx days (kinda still in em, but fox really isnt anymore). great work!
  12. i really like that man, the braiding sets it off perfect
  13. I'm just running out of titles, I hope everyone doesnt mind me posting so many wallets...it's been a busy month. this one's pretty cool in that i'm finally starting to get my feet wet experimenting with dyes and layering. I got a whole rainbow of dye the other day so i've been having fun playing around, I just really want to learn how to do a nice fade from light in the middle to black on the edges...any tips? anyways, this is a midlength for a gentleman in germany, it's wider because their ID's are apparently wider than normal. first time i've ever done 5 card slots, my pocketing's getting pretty decent so i'm happy with that. I've got a piece that's going to be featured on a fashion blog in the works right now and 2 others like this one, so i'll have more by the end of the week, i'm sure!
  14. I would love to to a collab piece with someone if they want to tool me a shell (hint hint ) grumpy- thanks! i'll look into it, that would be perfect
  15. i got an order for an id holder, this is what i came up with. it's a cutout, but with no plastic in it, we couldnt find any sort of material that was thick enough and wouldnt get hazy before the wallet died. any suggestions? (this was before i finished the edges too...sorry)
  16. they're designed for back pockets, some to fit in and some (like these 2) to peak out and be work with a braided reign. I'm hopefully going to have some time to make my aunt a long wallet/check book next week, if i can finish all my jobs for the week by like wednesday
  17. been carrying one since september, works perfect if you have 20-30 cards though, you should probably get a seperate cardholder or a long wallet i would think, thats so many!
  18. the whole thing is 4-5oz, i've toyed around with using something thinner for pockets but i really like how sturdy the leather i'm using is
  19. heres a couple I made this week i'm really working on craft, i hope it looks like it's improving!
  20. that looks super good man, i need to learn how to carve. wow...very impressed
  21. i do use an overstitch wheel, i just don't use a grover because of all the curves in the pieces. I've had my first wallet for 6 months and the stitching's fine, i really think it'd be hard to bust a stitch, no? i learned to braid from this site! don't remember where i found a tutorial but it's here.
  22. thanks everyone! as far as design goes, really the only thing that i call my own out of these pictures is that first cardholder, which was a collaborative design with a customer/friend that ended up being a favorite of other customers as well. the regular snap wallet is my take on japanese leather wallet design (a lot of my stuff is), like the ones seen Here . i got into the craft by wanting one but not being able to afford the $300 price tag...so i made my own. more pictures of my work: heres a guitar pick holder I made recently as well: and a cardholder with a died inner lining (first time using a lining) and thinner pockets to keep the thickness to a minimum this is a repost, but since the site went down recently, heres a long wallet i did over christmas: I really owe a lot to this site, just reading and learning about everyone's work. it's nice to have a place to post random, beginner wuestions and not get shot down. so thanks everyone! and thanks for the kind words as well
  23. haven't posted in a while but i've hit about the 6 month mark since i first started working with leather so i figured i'd update. i've been swamped with a lot of the same stuff over and over again, but slowly building a nice little buisness for myself (crazy after such a short time). here's a couple updates on my work, i've been trying to press in my stitching as it was suggested last time i posted some pieces, but mostly i've been working on my pocketing/edging and getting everything straight and as machine-made looking as i can, without a machine. I've also been trying to design pieces that flow and function but look nice too i'm also getting the bug to try some tooling...we'll see.
  24. that's awesome! it looks machine sewn, if it is...you have a machine that goes through that thickness of leather? (sorry, real newb question haha)
